Whichever instrument you are best at, or whatever needs filling for the band! Sure everyone and they momma play guitar, but a majority of guitarists you will encounter forming local bands arn't that good/versatile, unless you find some awesome true music lovin' bros.
It bothers me when these local dudes have been playing guitar for 10+ years and they are still exclusively writing/playing Vans warped-tour punkpop kind of stuff(probly to score the preteen girls but w/e). I don't know about you guys but I live in a musically retarded culturally dead semi-metropolis area of the U.S. Only bands like this and random hipster flavor of the week dubstep/electronic DJ's get shows. A very select few here appreciate original rock, jazz, acoustic/folk, experimental or anyone trying to make new sounding original music for that matter. Here if your not playing top 40 covers or in tremendously gay emo band your pretty much screwed.
btw star_xes that is a sick bass, I have a fretless myself, Ibanez Gary Wilson 5-string - but I am almost contemplating on selling it.. she's kind of a one trick pony, but i'm afraid of regretting letting her go later on.. fond memories and whatnot .

I am a guitarist but if I had a Rickenbacker bass and a really powerful valve amp I would totally dig playing bass in a band

Geetar. I've played 10 or so instruments in my lifetime, and the guitar is far and away the most fun. The bass is fun if you're stoned and you have a good drummer. There's nothing like being locked in a pocket. Right now I play guitar in a band and wouldn't change a thing. We're starting to right some really black music.

I didn't think Noel was much of a bassist.
Phil Lesh Flea P-Nut Eric Wilson Ray Manzarek
Yeah there have been lots of good white bassists.

Ray Manzarek played the keyboard. The Doors didn't have a bass player.

Bass all day, then drums. Funky slap bass or fatty dub grooves just blow me away.
Spacey guitar playing is awesome, but not everyone has the concept on lock-down.

If you rip a guitar solo, all the guys in the crowd scream and cheer. If you are laying down a fat groove on bass, all the girls are swinging their hips. Which would you rather do?
ps: I am biased. I was a professional bassist for years.
