Thankfully, coir is naturally contam-resistant, so if boiling water doesn't kill trich, it doesn't matter. Not much will grow on straight coir except mushroom mycelium.

nice to know.

Basically dumping boiling water over coir isnt pasteurizing. You need to keep it at 180 degrees for an hour? I dont know if I remember right. I dont pasteurize my coir, I dump boiling water on it. Mine doesnt have trich in it

I would imagine if it did, boiling water may kill it (it doesnt take 90 min at 250 to kill trich spores, your thinking bacterial endospores in grain, which really is alot less time then that) but a true pasteurization would be a safer bet.

I would bet the trich treated coir would grow mold quite easily if you just add water. Boiling water maybe not.

But anyways as was stated, its not an additive they wouldnt put on the package, since its an "incentive" so if it dont say it, it dont got it.

i spent quite a lot of time trying to find what indeed does kill a trich spore.

to no avail.

so as far as i am concerned the only thing that i personally know to kill trich spores is ~90 minutes at 250.

as for the endospore thing. i dont think thats very relevant to this thread :S

So as far as you know youll just use a number thats relevent to bacterial endospores? The reason we pressure cook grain and get it to 250 degrees for 90 minutes is NOT to kill trich spores, its to kill bacterial endospores.

I know its not relevant, you brought it up.

Trich spores die easily.

Scientists discovered today that trichoderma spores survive re-entry on meteorites. Trich most likely came from space.

 ive steamed grains to get them fully colonized and fruited.

i dont know bout no endospores.

and i was unaware that trich spores died easily.

i figured they had to be pressure cooked.

do you know what temp trich spores do die at?

I could use some advice about using coir in pftek.

I'm a beginner grower and I recently switched to a 50/50 coir/vermiculite substrate (previously using vermiculite and BRF). I pasteurized the substrate using a pressure cooker.

It's been about two weeks and I'm not seeing any mycelium in my jars. When I was using the BRF/Vermiculite mix I would usually start seeing some growth within a week. Did I do something wrong with the proportions or do I just need to be patient? Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Thanks!

This is an 8 year old post....

However, coir possesses significantly lower nutritional properties than BRF. So, in short, there's not nearly enough nutrition to promote and sustain growth. Switch back to the BRF/verm mix
