[FL] Woman's Leg Severed By Flying Pressure Cooker 1

MIAMI -- A 79-year-old woman's leg was severed Thursday morning when her pressure cooker fell off her stove and exploded, according to Miami Fire Rescue.
Fire officials said the woman was cooking in her home at 1736 SW 24th Court just after 10 a.m. when the pressure cooker fell to the floor.
"Right now, we don't know exactly what happened, but from what we are told, she was cooking, and for some unknown reason, the pressure cooker fell," said Lt. Ignatius Carroll, of Miami Fire Rescue. "The impact caused it to explode. Maybe pieces from the pressure cooker severed her leg completely."
The woman's leg was severed below the knee, officials said.
"We don't know what part of the pressure cooker actually did the damage," Carroll said.
A family member put a tourniquet on the woman's leg to slow the bleeding. Carroll said that if the woman had been alone, she likely would have bled to death.
Rescuers arrived to find the woman on the floor with food everywhere.
Carroll called it "one of the freakiest accident calls that we have ever heard."
The woman was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital in stable condition. Carroll said doctors were working to save the woman's leg.
Holy shit folks, be safe when you're canning this year!

Yikes, that is some shit right there.
Be careful folks, a pressure cooker at 15 PSI is like a bomb sitting on your stove top. Literally.

Yikes!
I remember almost dropping one just after moving it between burners, exploding metal shards would not be pleasant.
This news article will strike fear into every amateur cultivator to exercise extreme caution when operating a pressure cooker. Truth be told is that there is alot of potential hazards in home cultivation that sometimes even the experienced cultivator will get liquored up and forget about.
Wish I had a video of lighting both my arms on fire during work in a glovebox. Thankfully propylene burns it fual source as fast as it does.

Maybe pressure cookers should be treated like wild mushrooms, when in doubt throw it out.
Sometime a used battered pressure cooker is just not worth it. At least that is what I have heard, you don't want one that has been dropped or banged around. Treat those puppies with respect.

I have a AA 25X that has been used at least one a month since 1970. If you take care of your PC you will be safe and only need to replace things every 20 years.

But seriously I was very nervous when I started using PC's for the first time. Images of the lid exploding off and crushing/burning my face danced around in my head

I don't know about this women but I don't think people realize how dangerous a pressure cooker can be if not used properly.
I don't think people should be scared to use one, Just carful.

I have 2 theories:
1) She tried to move it, realized her bones with the density of a dry sponge couldn't hold it and she dropped it, or
B) Part of her nightgown got caught on it and she dragged it right off the top of the stove as she hobbled away.

Hey, I'm just being realistic here. How else would an elderly woman fuck up something as simple as pressure cooking? You know the grannies are all about it, so one of those two things must've happened. The article said it fell... How would a heavy ass pressure cooker full of stuff just fall off the stove if not for it being tangled in their clothes, or they tried to lift it and failed?

Are they going to make pressure cookers illegal now? It only takes 1 person to make people freak the hell out and ban it.

Most likely the lady was cooking beans or some other starchy food in it, which is a big no no. The main valve probably got clogged with the starch and then a bean got wedged up in the safety release valve which all PC's have and will pop off before danger, but not if something large blocks it off.
So then she probably saw that her cooker had stopped rattling, went over to pull the weight off to see if steam was coming out, burnt her hand from the 300F steam coming out, knocked the PC on the floor, and KABOOM!
I know a friend of a friend's uncle that sliced off his fingers doing something similar. PC's are to be respected!

While running he tried to open it when it got clogged and stopped rattling. It was most likely a old model with no locking mechanism to prevent opening while hot.
