overlay question
    #1447829 - 04/10/03 09:13 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

alright, my friend has three trays of brf/verm cased with 50/50 tek. he let them sit a day or two too long and he believes they have experienced overlay. they are all much more colonized than he has ever let a casing get. he decided to stick one in the fridge (wrapped in many layers of tinfoil) to cold shock it in hopes that it would pin.

well he took it out of the fridge today and noticed tiny pools of water sitting on some of the mycellium. he decided that if this one had overlay then it would be safe to assume the other two did as well. trying to solve this, he took a knife and sterilized it, then opened the terrarium and sort of broke up the mycellium a bit with the tip of the knife. he did this to the two trays that weren't cold shocked. after that he threw down some pasteurized peat moss (no more verm...) to cover most of the mycellium.

now, on the third tray (the one that he tried to cold-shock) he didn't break up the mycellium - he simply threw the peat moss over it. will this tray be alright? should he go back even now and deep scratch it? As long as the layer of dead cells isn't covering the entire length of the tray, mycellium will still be able to grow right?

he has never dealt with overlay before and would greatly appreciate the suggestions of others. thank you in advance for any replies

i've never had it, so i can't say for sure, but it certainly sounds like the diagnosis and the treatment were both right. me, i'd have also deep scratched the third tray, and would probably go back and do it now. a second opinion would be better.

supposedly, if it's still sterile, you may have delayed and perhaps reduced your harvest, but it's impossible to say by how much. a valuable lesson learned.

good luck E Tard

if there were puddles of water on the casing it would be best to deep scratch with a sterile knife.
