Shroom ID - Adelaide, South Australia - Possibly Gymnopilus sp.?
    #14398283 - 05/04/11 04:09 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Habitat: Fallen rotting tree.
Gills: Orange/brown/rust.
Stem: Brown/light brown. Hollow but not particularly fragile.
Cap: Orange/brown/rust, with more variation that the gills. Concave/flat.
Spore print color: A dark orange/brown.
Bruising: No color change was observed.
Location: South Australia, Adelaide Hills.

What do you guys think? My friends and I are pretty inexperienced but we think they might Gymnopilus sp. Are there any species that people often mistake for them?

Thanks!

Gymnopilus sounds right. I'm not sure which species or if they're psychoactive.

I wouldn't know. I never bother with them. They're bitter as hell.

I've found contradicting information on this.

I was looking around at informaion on G. sapineus and Roger's mushrooms mentioned some species of Gymnopilus may be "deadly poisonous." Is this because of confusion with Galerina or some other mycotoxin I don't know about?

Roger's Mushrooms said:
Habitat singly or in small tufts on hardwoods and conifers. Found throughout North America. Season July-October. Not edible, some species of Gymnopilus can be deadly poisonous.

EDIT: I also find it strange that in the wikipedia articule on G. sapineus, the edibility to the right of the article say psychoactive whil the text iself states in the first paragraph specimens do not contain psilocybin. I'm confused ...

This is pure BS. Australia has many active gym species.

Gymnopilus junious are inactive from most reports in Australia, they are hardly the only species of Gymnopilus we get though.  Other confirmed active gyms are definately out there.

someone said in a previous post that gymnopilus lose potency in 2 weeks of being dried and the samples that were analyzed were older then 2 weeks. so that could be the reason why people are thinking that australian G. junonious is inactive. anyone know if this is true?

Yeah, apparently close to kava, I have never had kava myself but I did definately feel a level of relaxation come over me similar to what is described with kava.  It was a very pleasent experience, not at all psychoactive though.

They are actually growing on a tree stump in my front yard so I plan to give it another shot, just to confirm my findings in my own mind.

G.dilepis, G.norfolkensis is likely to be active plus there are a good number of undescribed gym finds showing bluing or activety. It's estimated that only 5-10% of Australia's fungi have been described and I believe its gyms are an area rich with potential.

There are over 40 species of Gymnopilus that occur in Australia and probably a few undescribed ones. I'm not sure how many of them are active but I would guess that at least a dozen are.
