How long can mycelium last in jars?

Hi, I was going to birth my jars of mycelium in about two weeks (I inoculated them a few days ago) but I've been delayed. Now I won't have a chance to birth them until probably late June. Thats SIX weeks instead of two. Will they be ok?

May i add that i support the half-ass tek in this particular situation, and only this situation. See what happens of course... But start out fresh when you get back.

Pop them in the fridge once they're fully colonized and you should be golden.

If you are not able to refrigerate the fully colonized jars, six weeks is not normally much to worry over but it sounds rather like you've used a lot of inoculate at multiple points if your goal was to birth them short of a four week time frame. They aren't usually too sensitive to oxygen deprivation to the point of spoilage until after about 8 weeks at "normal" room temperatures. What you'll find is that the primordia may start growing around the inside of the glass especially in the case of light exposure. As the primordia grow around the inside of the jar it makes the cakes a lot harder to "birth." The advantage is that within a couple of days you have fully mature fruits to peal from the side of the cake that are rather compact and dense as I've known this to apply to the B+ strain. There's nothing wrong with them, they just have greater weight by volume. Your best bet would be to store them in a very cool dark place. Perhaps you needn't go to the extreme of full refrigeration and could use your refrigerator as a "holding cell" to slow down the growth but at a slightly warmer temperature than you would usually set your refrigerator. Many have found that most of the "cold" fruiting benefit is between 68 and 72°F Psilocybe cubensis mycelium has an ideal growth temperature at 86°F. If the temperature is too low, the mushroom will grow very slowly or not at all. Mycelium will be killed at a temperature of about 100 degrees F. I am unaware of the tolerance to extremely cold temperatures of the species you are growing which is probably of a tropical variety, so I would use discretion. The obvious concern is that if you halt their growth with too low of a temperature before they are fully colonized you offer the opportunity for contamination to set in. But if others have had the experience that you can hold them in the fridge for several weeks without any detrimental effects then by all means take advantage of that if it is tried and true, and yours are fully colonized.
