Thieves!

What is your stance on thieves? Do you sympathize with them, or are they the scum of the Earth to you? It is legal in some states (maybe all? Enlighten me) to shoot and kill someone who trespasses on your property. Some people see that as wrong, as human life is not less valuable than the jewelry he/she is stealing. I think it depends on the circumstances.
To make things clear, I am talking about people who virtually make careers out of breaking into people's homes or cars. Not the guy who nicks your stash, occasionally steals petty things like cds, or steals your food (Nick, if you are reading this, you're an ass!)
Personally, I cant stand thieves. They rank just barely above murderers and rapists, but thats pretty harsh. However, I don't fucking appreciate it when all my hard earned work becomes meaningless when a stranger bolts out the door with my stuff. If I ever caught a thief, I would give him a good kick in the teeth and sit on him until the police arrives. The only time I would ever kill a thief is if he pulled a gun on me, but then the crime goes beyond criminal trespassing.
So what say you?

I think it's a shitty lifestyle choice to steal for survival but our whole society is built around stealing from people so I see no problem with it in this dog eat dog civilization.

Anyone who claims stealing stuff such as cds is just making excuses for their cheap, douchey ass.

We had this thread twice already this week Use the search engine.
OP you are a thief - unless you don't partake in our economic hierarchy. The whole system is based on theft.
Banks expand the currency and steal money. Our militaries go to war and steal resources. Our nations are loan sharks to the 3rd world so we can steal their resources.
Some china man got paid a penny a week to make your shoes.
If you are supporting it and benefiting (which we all are) then how can we be hypocrites and complain about theft?
Its just a game for greedy monkies.

You shouldn't feel sorry for thieves. They should sorry for themselves after you've beaten the shit out of them.

Didnt see any with polls, just people complaining about thieves and people complaining about killing thieves. I want to see numbers.
And i didnt break into a chinese sweatshop and steal shoes. You have a twisted view on theft. There's this thing called 'trade'.

Theft is taking something by dishonesty.
I'm pointing out that it makes you a hypocrite to support big thieves and accept the benefits of big thieves while (if?) condeming small ones.
Thats the truth of the matter. Its the big picture.
Its like saying my theft is good but yours is bad.

If we existed in a system of honest fair trade then that would be relevant but the fact is we don't. We exist in a greed hierarchy where someone has to take a loss for us to gain.

If you don't want your shit stolen, protect it. Morality is a farce.

What am I supposed to do? Stand guard on my house 24/7? Build a moat around it? Booby trap it Home Alone-style?
I like to think that most humans are still decent (in some areas more than others) and would not steal opportunistically. Because they know me, because they follow the golden rule, because they're afraid the neighbors might see them-- I don't really care why.
If I leave the lawnmower out front while I go take a shit, I shouldn't come out to find it gone. That's ludicrous! Where do you draw a line for the paranoia? Should I bring in my mailbox at night too?
I have to admit that I really loved that show "It Takes A Thief." Thieves or not, those guys were geniuses in burglary: breaking & entering, finding the hiding spots, collecting everything quickly, getting away in 10 minutes with everything you own. Seeing the aftermaths of those houses makes you double-think how safe your own house really is.

I'm no thief, and I do have a system of morals. My only point is that my morality is subjective, and there is no system of Karma, or Jesus with a shotgun, guarding our earthly possessions for us.
Which is why I voted, "You can't 'own' anything, man"

I can. But that’s because I’m not a penniless hippie.

Well then, I hope you have enough to build that moat you wanted! Or else my point stands.

I just saw a show on TV documenting a guy like this. It was intense. Cuff Me if You Can on Investigation Discovery, episode Shady Ladies' Man. The guy's name is Trevor Woods.

completely circumstantial
as a general moral principle, you shouldn't take something unless a) you have LITERALLY no other options. this excludes basically all poor americans. you always have options other than theft here. b) you have very convincing reason to believe that whatever you are taking will go unused (to waste) if you do not take it (ie stealing unused internet bandwidth)
