I always wondered if other people perceive colors the same.  Maybe what I see as red, you see as blue,  but we both call it the same name.  I also wonder if we have different shades of color.  Maybe the world looks brighter through your eyes than it does through mine.  Have you ever thought about this?

That is a question that has plagued me since my early childhood, good to know others ponder the same thing.

Same here.  I have thought about this since I can remember.

I also had the same quandary, and while it seems to be a philosophical paradox, science (light wavelengths, how rods/cones in our eyes work, etc) implies that common sense should dictate we generally perceive colors similarly along a blue/yellow/red wheel. The fact that we understand what's going on and how it works does matter in this case.

However, logically, there would also be those with sensory perception distortions/disorders; however rare, these people don't see light the same way everyone else does. So you have the color blind, the blind with the equivalent of closed-eye visuals, and those with synesthesia.

I've thought about this and then I realized that I have little knowledge on visual perception. I'm sure there's some long scientific explanation for it but I doubt it would make sense to me.

I chose red and blue because, when I close my right eye, everything has a bluish hue.  Then, if I close my left eye everything has a reddish hue.

It blows my mind that the totality of our visual perception-- every color we've ever created or "invented"-- fits in this small sliver of the electromagnetic spectrum.

The Sun emits electromagnetic radiation at many wavelengths across the EM spectrum. These images show the Sun in the infrared, visible light, four different ultraviolet wavelengths, and in X-rays.

More on topic though, tennis balls are fucking green.
I feel like one man against the world when I make this statement.
I've never met anyone who agrees with me (but Google shows I'm not alone!).

Also, my ex-g/f's eyes were partway between a turquoise and a green.
And I'd always argue that her eyes were green.

I've wondered exactly that for most of my life. I remember being around 12 years old and asking my peers what they thought of this, they thought I was crazy.

I as well :yesnod:

I mean we can all agree that grass is green, the sky is blue, etc etc because we are receiving that same exact wave length of light...But, how do I know what you perceive as green is my same perception of green? Again, breaks down to how others view/perceive the world differently.

This is indeed something I ponder about often, and bring up to others in an attempt to get a some what interesting conversation going (as many friends/people I'm around rather talk about pointless bull shit)

This is all very interesting to me as well.  I wonder if some artists (Van Gough comes to mind but really any talented creator) are continually experiencing sensory perceptions completely alien to those of the rest of us? And how would we ever know since experiences are immaterial and words only hinder their transference?

This always been a fun thought.  I also like to ponder the idea of blind people and colors.
I use to know this blind guy(not born blind) and he use to explain his experiences with mushrooms.

Even more mind blowing is someone who was born blind. What happens when they ingest psychedelics? What does the brain do when it has no point of reference?  I think it would be very "liberating" to experience "closed eye visuals" when you have no reference point of what anything looks like.

I imagine a blind person(born blind) sees just as many colors as we do,if not more, when under the influence of psychedelics.

I have not pondered these ideas in a long time..  I am glad I saw this thread.

Also something I've always thought about....

But someone born blind, would they experience colors/closed eye visuals :strokebeard:?...I may be wrong but I think not, as they have absolutely no concept of color. People that are born blind and psychedelics has always been an interesting topic.

I'm just pissed off about our eye sight. I love what we have, BUT... humans are trichromats, we possess three independent channels for conveying color information, derived from the three different cone types.

There are some creatures that are tetrachromats. They can see farther into the ultraviolet spectrum in some cases

So do these creatures with tetrachromats see a larger range of the spectrum?
