Pc ing Spawn Bags 1

Hi,
Just bought some autoclavable bags and I'll use them to make wheat grain spawn.
Since I've got no tyvek sleeves or impulse sealer, what do you recommend method/material in order to "seal" the bag prior to sterilization?
Thanks in advance and regards

You don't need any of that to do filter bags strictly speaking. I did my first handful of bags just folded up. They still seal themselves down in the PC and then you open them in your sterile work area. I use tyvek sleeves now mostly because they protect the patch. Before I started using them the filter patch would sometimes get kind of stuck to the plastic and peeled off when I opened the bags to spawn. That pretty much ensured the bag was ruined. But if you're careful with the filters it can work fine.

MKF can just a flat slip of tyvec work in place of a sleve? And what about polyfill tied in to pc and then remove for inoc.?

I suppose smaller tyvek slips would work to protect the filter patch. Though they'd probably slip around and be a pain. But really I find the sleeves work really well without much fuss.

i fold my bags over about 1 1/2" twice to just the top rim of the filter patch, then push all the air out and tape over the edge with a clear plastic tape about 6" long on either side of the filter patch. i have never had a bag stick once.---but i have bursted bags by trying to cool it down too fast. it doesn't pay to be in too big a hurry after sterilization.
without an impulse sealer you can still use 2" plastic tape after you put your spawn in and fold back down like you had in the sterilizer and seal the edge with the tape. i would go about 1/2 the width of the tape off the lip of the fold. that way you catch the fold well. i go all the way to the back with the tape.

I use tyvek sleeves in the bags because my sterilizer is not in a sterile location. After the sterilization, I have to load the bags into a wheelbarrow and roll them across the lawn. Tyvek sleeves give 100% success keeping the contamination out of unsealed bags. I won't prepare bags without them. I've re-used the tyvek sleeves several hundred, if not thousands of times by now.
Even from Europe, it will pay to find a local supplier, or order them from Miller's Precision by the box. RR

Outside of the US we get screwed on shipping. It's not the vendors fault. They want to track their package, fair enough, as they should, but wow, on the other side of the world we pay USPS a premium for it.
Fortunately suppliers of filter bags are great.
Getting things like sleeves is a pain! I'm trying to contact that company RR linked to, to see if they'll ship to Australia. But their contact page is busted.

Thanks for the replies.
Just ordered a couple of sleeves. This will be enough for now, since my PC can handle only a pair at the time and it's only for trying a few species.
After reading your answers and searching the forums, I realize that is better to go by the book.
Another question:
I got some sawdust to grow shiitake, A. aegerita and so on. It rained heavily the last 2 days and the aged sawdust pile was a bit moist. I tried to dig but it was wet till the bottom.
I won't be using it for now, is it best to dry it completely, right? I got some cardboard sawdust too. Is it alright to mix it with the wood sawdust, since is a bit coarse, as well as straw and coffee grounds?
Here's a photo of the wood sawdust:

Thanks and regards.

i would definitely dry it out to reduce mold infestation which can come fast in wet piles like that. i am having to dry out my shredded Spanish cane as it got wet the other night too in a big rain here.

Forgot to mention earlier that I don't have a flowhood. How do I inflate the bags, since I work only in a cabinet with an alcohol lamp?
Thanks for the advice houdinihar

I have a gloveless box that is tall enough to open the filter bags. So I just kind of puff up the sides, dump in the spawn, and seal with a zip tie. I've had great results with that method. You just need a tall enough clean box.
