Straw Mushroom Cultivation technique
    #14466177 - 05/17/11 03:08 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Hello,

I want to try my hand on growing these tasty mushrooms.  I got a lot of rice straw and rice hull which I can use.  Although it seems most of the techniques used are for outdoor growing. I am also getting contradicting info from various internet sources about the ideal substrate.

I hope there is a more efficient and productive cultivation method suitable for future expansion.

Hoping people here can contribute their know-how.

My understanding is that rice straw is ideal. I haven't tried to grow these yet -- I'm waiting until summer. These suckers need temps above 80 F!

Chapter 11-2 in Book 1 of The Mushroom Grower's Handbook is about paddy straw mushroom growing. There are PDFs of the book on this site. Good luck, and tell us about your results!

I assume they mean paddy straw (Volvariella volvacea).

This species needs heat as has already been mentioned so hopefully you live in an area that stays pretty warm.  Otherwise I bet you're going to be fighting gravity keeping the temps up.

No problem with its temperature requirements since I live in the tropics.  More concerned about a cultivation technique suitable for commercialization, most papers I've read espouse the simple outdoor method which doesn't maximize space.

superfunkibey,
most commercial production is done with cotton additives or substrates. Chang only makes mention of it in his book and I haven't  seen any good writeups about this species from a commercial viewpoint. most is low-tech as you already pointed out. part of the problem, commercially speaking is its low BE even with cotton supplements. i am looking at it as a novelty myself, but i do have a commercial culture from Penn State. pm me if it interests you.
