+ Central Arkansas Season 2011 +
    #14473378 - 05/18/11 01:40 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

What's up everyone Dr. here. So i've been following these forums for awhile now using information every now and then and getting ID's off toher posts and never made an account. Anyway, I live in Arkansas and havent seen any posts about funguy hunting around my area, only surrounding states. I've been hunting for about 2 years now and have gathered quite a bit of knowledge about location/time of year/time of day/species/spore prints/and of course tripping :mushroom2:

* So lets start off with the type of funguy you will find in this area (central arkansas):
- Gymnopilus sp.
- Panaeolus cinctulus
- Psilocybe cubensis(pic is 2 cubes.)

* Next the locations:
- Cow fields where the cows graze or eat hay (not grain fed)(lots of success here)(only one i will be talking about)
- Wetlands (open land near rivers or ponds) (somewhat success here)
- Woods (with very few paths and hikers)(not so much success)

* Now time of year:
- Late May-October. Enough  said.

* Time of day:
- Now i've heard of people going at night because "that's when they are the biggest", well if your going in a cow field full of cows at night goodluck not getting attacked by a bull or stepping in cow shit. So the best time (if you are in a secluded field) is at sun rise-2pm. Any time between then is just fine.

* Weather conditons:
- Wait for a good rainy day, then go out the next hot/sunny day where it will be the most humid. Lots of them in May around here.

* Now Cow field hunting:
- Bring gloves , a paper bag, and shitty shoes.
- When you get to your field look around and try and determine where the cows normally chill at. (it will be where they all are when you get there)
- Walk somewhat close to the cows to where they start mooing, and running to the bull (biggest muther fucker). Just stand there till they stop (5-10minutes) this way they will get used to you and wont give away your postion or try attacking you.
- Find the tree lines in the field and start walking down them staying about 10-15ft away from the actual trees. (shrooms love shade)
- Search in all the tall grass patches. Thats where the ground is most fertile and the best spots for the shrooms to grow.
- Take your foot and gently brush over the tall grass while looking inside for white caps. (The cubes. look like boobs, big round white/tan caps with a brown nipple in the center.)Sometimes the will be a black/grey color from the spore dust. so just rub the cap a little till you can see the color change to white/tan then pick.
- Also check all the dry cowpatties you see (flipping them over helps)
- Make sure when you do find some that you thump the cap before picking so it releases spores in the air and on the ground making more shroom babys. Also when you go to pick one try and pinch it off as far down as you can (sometimes it means digging your fingers in some cow shit - gloves -)
- Now I only recomend hunting for the Cubes. in cow fields because they are about 90% of the funguy that grow there but there are also posionous ones there too. so better be safe then sorry.
- Place all your findings in the paper bag so the bag can absorb some of the moisture from them.
- Now when you get home don't eat these things wet and covered in spore dust and cow shit. Take a paper towel and wrap it around your finger and gently rub them clean. they will turn a pretty white color. you only really have to clean the stems and caps.
- Now drying them out. All you need is a table and a fan above it. Just make sure the fan is about 4-8 feet above the table so that the air gets to the table. Just set out all your little guys on the table with a little space between each one and turn the fan on high and let them sit for around 10 hours. (over night, then part of the next day)
- Keep drying them out till they are about bone dry and about 1/3rd their original size.

* Consuming the funguys:
- Personally i just eat em as is after drying. But you can cover them in ranch, or chop them up and boil them with some tea, dont actually boil the water with the shrooms in it,(boil, then take it down to a simmer then drop the funguy in with the teabag)
- The effects are noticable within 20 minutes. getting stronger and stronger for the next 4 hours. then you peak. then it gets weaker and weaker for the next 5 hours or so.

THANKS FOR READING MY LITTLE GUIDE. I WILL BE POSTING MORE INFORMATION AND PICTURES IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS WHEN I GO PICKING AND TAKE PICTURES.

I wish I knew about mushroom hunting when I lived in fArkansucks. Talk about perfect climate for them. Maybe when I go back to visit I'll hunt. What area you calling central? I was in j'ville.

Little Rock, Bryant, Benton 501. They grow all year except frost months. But the cubes get huge around here. the biggest one i found was almost a foot tall with a 9inch diameter cap

Man that's awesome! If only I knew, I had friends that owned cattle and goats and had fields out toward south bend. Day late and a dollar short I guess. I'd love to see fruits from this year if you can keep this updated, it may be beneficial to me to come out in august before school starts again.

How did you find species that aren't native to Arkansas in Arkansas?  As far as I know, there are no endemic fungi that we know for certain.

Just because they bruise doesn't mean they're active (boletes). Be sure to pos for identification before experimenting please, don't wanna get sick trying to have fun.

Man, that crap about Arkansas not having cubes is just that...crap.  Arkansas has plenty of cubes... I'm not sure how whoever made that state by state thing, but yeah, AR has the cubes...

Wow didn't realize Arkansas had such an abundance of cubes. Those ones in your hand are FIRE. Just beautiful perfect specimens. I just love conic shaped cubes.

question - how do you avoid the rancher/owner of the property? wouldn't they normally be up at sunrise?

Moat people will let u n their field.  Up here farmers don't live next to the pasture generally.  I've got permission for my fields though, no reason to be shady.

well alot of farmers dont live on their fields or their fields are so big that more the half of it isnt visable from their house. and if they let their cows graze that normally means "lazy farmer". but if there is a farmer just go with the "fuck it" additude. just go to the field anyways and just do your thing and dont even worry bout the owners. in my expirenece when u go to a private property field worrying about getting caught, you get caught. when youre like fuck it then nothing ever happens. just dont vandalise, litter, or mess with the cows. make seem as if you never even went.
