Taxing the people for driving?

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Washington lawmakers are kicking around a new idea to help raise funds to fix our highways and infrastructure: a national driving tax charging motorists by the mile.
A driving tax could either replace the current 18.4 cent a gallon federal gas tax or, possibly, add to it.
Whats the point of replacing the existing gas tax? American are having a hard enough time paying for everyday life as it is and now they kick around this idea? How but cutting spending on defense!? Fuck!

governments want money.
my dad worked for the state government and he told me they were planning on changing the registration system in australia. I don't know what its like in america but in aus you have to pay ~500-600 per year to register your car, and this includes medical insurance in the event of a crash for you and the other person.
But they were thinking of removing this yearly fee and adding in a driving tax based on how far one drives, i think it was somethign to do with carbon emissions also or something. but yeah, basically a polution/mileage tax instead of a fixed yearly registration fee.

Thats all fine if it was to just replace an existing tax but I do not have faith that the GOV would do that.
We are already being heavily taxed on many things and we should have no need to implement more when we could save the country billions and or trillions cutting elsewhere.
But hey we just hit the debt ceiling so this is prolly just pissing in the wind anyways.

Why do you say that?
I do not really believe this will happen but nothing surprises me any longer.

I just think there is way to much popular opposition to this sort of thing (especially if they label it "carbon whatever") but who knows?

Can't expect reasonableness from a bunch of crooks though. They act worse than mafia. Always remember they got you where the WANT you. Its like that for a reason. Without all that shit the world would be utopian and since we are greedy monkies that seems unlikely.
Its all humans do - fight for greed and control. Theres no way to convince everyone to not do that so we are just doomed until we collectively evolve enough intelligence to control the elements with all of us that desire these things. I think we might just kill the planet and ourselves first though.

At least (it sounds like) its a consumption tax. That's a step in the right direction.

i'm fairly sure carbon emissions taxes are a regular occurence around the world. if i'm not mistaken england has one currently.
in a constitutional sense there are legal issues with the gov introducing new taxes of this nature, in terms of apportionment and whatnot.

This is where evolution should kick in. If we evolved empathic abilities we would feel the pain we cause others and we could then learn to control the greed and megalomaniac tendancies

Im still trying to remain hopeful that this time period is indeed a moment of great evolution. They say its takes millions of years for evolution to occur. I think we can take giant steps in the next few.
Or maybe I am just a stupid sheeple

I know there are it's just I think it's lost a lot of steam here in the US. Especially in states like mine where coal or other carbon emitting industries are economic mainstays. Personally I think the whole argument is pretty retarded on both sides- by creating all these taxes it is only going to raise consumer prices. On the other hand we still use extremely inefficient methods of energy production and consumption.

i think it fits perfectly with western governments common philosophy of discouraging conduct through tax. they try to apply basic economic principles in that if the price of a good rises, the quantity demanded of that good will decrease. thus add tax to it, increase the price of it, encourage people to engage in this type of activity less. i.e. : ciggarettes, alcohol etc.
It benefits the government in excess revenue to handle its affairs, it benefits society at large because its discouraging carbon emissions and polution, and hopefully ushering society in a new technological direction, providing an incentive for innovation and the discovery of alternate fuel sources, i.e. hydrogen.

Agreed, there is so much money wrapped up in our current system, to break away from it would cause an uproar about jobs and so much other shit> even if it means the future would be so much better off.
And nuclear power needs to fucking go too. Its too dangerous and to expensive. A hell of a way to boil water.

yeah i totally agree that nuclear power should not be used. or atleast if it does it needs to be placed in areas that are almost free of natural disasters, or encased some how in some natural disaster proof enclosure. because the consequences of those things melting down is really just catastrophic. Not to derail but heres an interesting vid for you to watch on the topic of nuclear power and melt downs , relevant to the recent japanese situation.
but to be honest i think carbon emissions taxes and things are the way of the future. theres alot of debate and drive towards it , because governments can create a tradeable commodity out of the carbon emissions and things. i think its inevidable to be honest.

I think taxing carbon emissions in just going to endorse a continuity of the same old world power grid that we need to get rid of and forget about. Just another reason to make it seem like the we do are ok if we just tax them.
We need to spend our time and effort on implementing something entirely new.
Evolve.
