Blue Helix bought this at a flea market for $30.
What is it?

that ID looks right to me. It looks like those smaller ones in the pot are seedlings.
PS to HarveyWalbanger, every once in a while as I walk through my garden your name will pop into my head and I don't know why. It makes me feel kind of weird.

I love this little guy! It's just gorgeous with the bouquet on top right now!
And thanks everyone with the help on the ID. It helped me look up some care information. Interestingly what I found suggested bright ambient light rather than direct sun, which surprised me given this is a cactus after all. Now I have it close by a west-facing wall with some over hang branches such that it gets afternoon direct sun but not midday. I think it should be alright since it only sees direct sun after 3:30PM or so, well past the sun's peak intensity.
I definitely think this needs a new, larger pot, particularly after I noticed that the water panned on the soil's surface, penetrating only extremely slowly, when I tried to water it. Still, though, I am going to hold off on the replant until the blooms are done since I think otherwise they'd be terminated from the stress. After the bloom, I'll transfer the whole thing by gently breaking the current clay pot and moving the root ball to another about twice the size with proper soil and bottom drainage as required for the species.

Shouldn't need to break the pot, the whole thing will just pop right out. Lay it sideways and take the pot off the roots, is the safest way.

Also worth mentioning... It is self fertile. Every bloom is going to give seeds :p and they're a terrible pain in the ass to collect
EDIT: actually, I can see it already had babies... and they've already germinated in mama's pot.

Nah it will be rootbound and breaking the pot is a good idea.
It makes a lot of seeds.

The first thing that comes to my mind is a "rip-off".

From what I've read these are self fertile, so tell BlueHelix to pull out a paint brush.

A rip-off? Nah, I hardly think so. I looked these up online and the shipping alone would be $20 for one this size and the specimen close to $40. Mostly you can only buy little lemon-sized ones that wouldn't be even flowering yet and would take probably 10 years to get this size.
I love succulents and cactus. They are tough and don't need to be babied as much as most flowering plants (save maybe root rot). Kids and people leave them alone because they'll get hurt if they try to mess with them; I like that.
Another pink bouquet of flowers like what was on the top last May when I purchased it shot up the exact same time this year. Last year they lasted a month or so before withering away.
I hadn't noticed any seeds from the flowers--maybe there are some--but there definitely is cotton-like fluff that forms around the spines that is full of seeds. I am not sure the purpose of the fluff, but it seems plausible that birds would find it suitable for nest-building so pick at it and disperse the seeds. That's my guess anyway.
PS - I will switch pots this year, which should bring in some fresh nitrogen and give it some room, and Alan you are welcome to one of the baby ones since I plan on breaking those from the mother when I transplant.

If you manage to find some, why not sow them? Then you have even more cacti!!!

Yeah, hey I'm sorry to knock you cactus man... I honestly didn't pay much attention to what it was the first time I read the post. Because there isn't anything to show scale in the first photos, I mistook it for a little Mammillaria from Home Depot in a 4" pot. You have to admit that it has outgrown it's pot, so the size of the pot is deceiving when judging the size of the cactus.
At the end of the day, a plant's monetary worth is whatever you've paid for it. It does have pretty flowers. I also read that it very rarely throws off pups, so you want to take special care when you separate them from the mother. Good luck with her...

It's Blue Helix's cactus, you could ask him for seeds or trade for one of the baby ones that are growing around the edge of the pot.
