LOL
Is it only in California? It's so stupid. I heard about it yesterday on the radio and over a couple weeks ago from my dad about mercury in the new ones and the need to call a team up if they break.

yeah, its because the bulbs can interface with common computer OS's. google wants to control your home.
my local harware store is pissed and not taking any more for recycling because pge isn't coming through with their disposal plan.
CFLs lose efficiency if not left on for 15min or more. mercury in the house is supposed to be avoided to my knowledge, why we don't use those crap thermometers anymore.

Huh? You guys got crappy CFL's there. Mine typically last several years (3-4 years; they're on a few hours every day), and they come in several color temperatures (many people around here use them for micro-grows, with different colors for vegetative and flowering stages). Also, the amount of mercury in them is negligible, and definitely not an issue as long as you don't break the glass. I broke several over the years, and I'm still not retarded. No signs of mercury poisoning here.
