Someone once spray-painted: "Jive shit for rich white folk."

Any validity here?

I was once invited there to a teacher training seminar for Qi-Gong and Tai-Qi a some years back. It was super expensive and was several miles from my home so I would have to travel to get there. I was also pretty young at the time (though I had been teaching for a couple of years already) so driving by myself from southern to northern cali did not seem like a good idea to me.

Any way the reason I wanted to add something is the guy who invited me was one of the three founding members of the National Qi Gung Association of America. I took a class from him in SB and I think he just wanted to either

1: Copy my martial art because IMO my teacher was waaaaay beyond this guy. And in my few years of training after talking to this guy I could tell there was whole aspects of the art he was just ignoring.

2: This guy was rich and this was how he made his money. I felt like what he had to teach I already knew and he was still going to try and book me for it.

Also--- he was a kind of uptight and nerdy (he had like a gray haired curly jew fro) really pretentious (he played a flute during our meditations at one point)

I know I sound like an asshole who is being extremely judgmental. But I come from a school of tai qi where we only accept donations and this guy was charging ALOT so it offended me a great deal.

So I would have to agree with the spray painter.

My teacher was broke never asked for a dime and was the last person in the world you would think could teach you and kick your ass.

There is a negative or "dark side" to every category of humanity, so this also applies to our fields of knowledge which are themselves represented by individuals (who carry all aspects of the Self, including the shadow).

So, I think it is healthy to occasionally consider to what extent spirituality and philosophy is tainted with charlatanism, greed, status-seeking behavior, and other social monkey games that are true of other areas in our society.

As you said regarding the teacher who asked for nothing, I feel as though genuine insight needs no microphone and those few who encounter or possess that wisdom give of it freely without conditions. There are no "secrets" or "elite scriptures" reserved for only the holiest of minds -- even though this reservation of sacred truth is a common theme in world religions. Esoteric knowledge, to my mind at least, is so playful and elusive because of the very fact is it out in the open and contained in the simplest of truths which we often neglect to consider or re-consider. These are sometimes embedded in the various mystic or gnostic poems of the world, but they can also be found even in popular mythology (or under a rock, if you see where I'm going with this).

I feel as though the more honest people among the seekers of insight are those who freely laugh at and criticize themselves and the whole enterprise.

Hilaritas!
