Not long after Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto launched his fateful surprise attack at Pearl Harbor in late 1941, the High German command ordered the 10th U-boat flotilla to begin war time operations in the Gulf of Mexico. The primary objective was to disrupt the vital flow of oil carried by tankers from ports in Texas and Louisiana and to impede the flow of military hardware and supplies to the European front.
The Germans were exceedingly successful in their Gulf campaign sending 56 vessels to the bottom; 39 of these are now believed to be in state or Federal waters off the Texas, Louisiana, and Florida coastline. In fact, naval historians tell us that Germany's concentrated war effort in the Gulf of Mexico in 1942 and early 1943 represent one of the most celebrated sea campaigns of all time. At least two U-boat Captains earned Germany's Distinguished Iron Cross for their efforts, and the campaign is credited with effectively disrupting U.S. oil and gas supplies for the first half of the war.

This is one of the bunkers on Galveston Island, TX, the pictures show a hotel that they have built on top of it.

Yeah, the Jap's Zeros were by far better than what the Americans had at the time during Pearl Harbor.

we were supplying england with merchant ships, and england was supplying russia. hitler patrolled our coast for a week he had u boats in the gulf and u boats were spotted next to new york. nothing happened off the coast though, at least not close enough civilians saw anything. it was a short mission i believe, and was soon called back as u boats were needed to defend the german coast line.
something else you may not know, in san fransisco there are catacombs that were armed with artillery to take down Japanese war ships if they happened to make it far enough to us to attack the coast. no jap battle cruisers ever did. but strangely enough a japanese submarine did make it into oregon, where a man apparently started a forest fire then left. also a bunch of balloons carrying incendiarys floated across the pacific sky and burned down some buildings in the u.s. from japan. not widely spoken of

I actually knew about that one. It was pretty ineffective.

I think it's intersting how hidden/unknown these facts are. You never read about any direct attacks near America during WW2(except pearl harbor).

My grandfather was a fisherman in Newfoundland, in 1942 he went over to his boathouse one morning at like, 2am, and when he got there, he heard voices. It was germans, and out in the fjord was a U-boat. They were getting water and stuff. He remained quiet until they left, then told the authorities.
The Germans were using the fjords along the coast of newfoundland to hide, then they would pick off the convoys leaving St. Johns for England, you can even see the outline of a U-boat under the water that was sunk just outside of St.Johns Harbor, if you ever visit Marconi's tower.

Every new fact just shows that us using the atom bomb made us king. If it wasn't for that, we may still be in war.

With who? WWII was practically won by the time we developed them anyways. Unless you mean that its development steered the soviet union out of further aggression for the time being.
