First BRF Cake Grow Slow Colonization Low Temperature, 65 days later, 2 for 6

This is my friend's first BRF cake grow, using the PFtek vids by RR and company. B+ strain from trusted vendor list. He inoculated on the night of 5/8. Here's some photos. Temps have been cold over here, his house has been 62-68 deg. Are these going too slow to be able to finish in time? Only these 4 of 10 are showing anything. What do you think of that black spot? That was the end of the syringe, which I thought was a concentration of spores. Yes, he did shake the syringe before using. I want to thank everyone who contributes to this site, what a interesting forum with lots of inventive people. Just wondering if I should just start a new batch and use an incubator this time?
7 Days after innoc. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It has warmed up here, but is this a little too little a little too late? When do you call the time of death? If they aren't 100% by 4 weeks? 13 Days after innoc------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

23 days after innoc-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These look kind of cloudy. Could it be cob web?
  Is that yellow normal?

Pins on 2 cakes, starting to make moves....blue appears to be bruising

temps are fine... I'd wait to see what happens with the jars a little longer as it can take up to 2 weeks for spores to show growth.
that spot doesn't look very good, however i've seen myc overcome much worse than that in the jar. As long as you have a dry verm layer at the top of the jar and/or micropore tape covering your injection holes, it's ok to leave the jars near each other, just come back and check on them in a week (if I was you)
In the mean time, I personally would pick up 12 more jars and get another batch ready as I don't like to play the waiting game, I like to keep things rolling

Thanks for the quick reply. So for future inoculations, is it wise to just leave the black spores in the syringe?

So when I shake the syringe, should the spores turn the liquid black? I know you said that black spot looks bad, but it looks the same as when I first injected it into the last jar.

Your syringe turned black when you shook it? IMO I would let them grow & see what happens, but I have never heard of a syringe turning black when shaken, but I haven't been at this for very long.

I've seen the spore solution from "earth's tongue" and their solution was black and made spots like that... Unless you really have that many spores in the syringe....

My syringe didn't turn black, there are clumps of spores in the syringe and they don't seem to break up much when shook. Should they? So when injecting the last jar, that big clump went in. I have 3 other syringes, different strains, that look the same. They all have a big clump floating around.

smack the syringe sideways on your palm to help break the stuff up. I'm 99.99% sure those are a bunch of spores all stuck together. Just gotta break them up

I have a similar spot in one of my BRF jars and attributed it to a collection of spores from the syringe. So far, so good. I am about 12 hours ahead of you. My friend Myc thread.
Best of luck!

I guess I buy the cheap stuff. Ha. As I have never had clumps of spores that turned black. But this is good to know.

These were started 5/8, I think I'm days ahead of you. Not much happening though. I think it's time to get more jars and start a new batch. Good luck with your babies, maybe they'll grow up and go to college one day.

After 2 months, I'm still waiting on PF Albino. It's growing, just slow & yes it has GE. Set them aside & start another batch.

I've posted some new pictures, 23 days in. Looks like some of them are coming around. I think at least 2 of these are ready to birth after another week. The rise in temps over here seem to have definitely sped them up.

Posted pics 27 days after innoc. Is this 100% colonization? They all look ok except the bottom 2 on the right side. I have closeups of both. One has black in it and the other has these little specs of purple. Any ideas what that may be?

Don't know what the purple "stuff" is, but I see green in the middle of that black spot. I would say that one is a goner.

They look pretty colonized. Let them sit in the jars a week before you dunk and roll. If you get pins or little white tuffs starting to pop up, then you can birth them early.
If it were me I would scrape off the pink and black spot with a razor or knife. The mold may only be on the surface of the cake. I would put potential contams in a separate fruiting chamber. I'd try to fruit the contaminated jars, just keeping them separate.

That Pink I believe is Lipstick mold and you don't want to mess around with that. I would toss the jars that have the pink in them. Also wouldn't open up any of them inside the house that you are going to throw away.

Never fruit contaminated jars. It's not worth risking your health for a couple of mushrooms.
Cobweb mold is grey and hair-like.
