Removing maggots
    #14468497 - 05/17/11 03:35 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I found the biggest subs I've ever seen yesterday, but unfortunately a few are infested with maggots. In the ~18 hours that I've had them in my house, the maggots have really started to mess up the gills.

What is the best way to get rid of the maggots?

Soaking them in cold water for 20 minutes?
I'm not so much worried if the maggots die and stay in the gills, I just don't want them to be alive as they're causing damage.

Or since the mushroom has already started to dry should I just remove the cap and keep the stem?

Would you eat food with maggots in it? A wise one once said "food rules apply to drugs man".

Maggots are full of protein and your stomach easily digests them. I see no harm in eating them since the mushrooms aren't actually rotting.

I just want them to leave my shrooms alone

EDIT: Just gonna chuck the caps away and keep the stems.

If you soak them the maggots will die and sink to the bottom of the dish. Your mushrooms might get all gross from the water but I guess a little water damage won't be bothering you much.

Think I'll just keep the stems. After closely examining the gills there are much more maggots than I thought, and I think soaking them will just make the caps completely fall apart.

I'd chuck them all personally, just knowing there was or still is dried maggots in them could really mess your head up if you trip on them, but thats just me

Driving off maggots is easy - I do this whenever I've brought wild shrooms into the house:

simply put them on some newspaper and shine a lamp over them.
The combination of heat and light will scare off all the nasties.
