Perfect incubating local?
    #14463224 - 05/16/11 05:04 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Just kicking around the idea of starting a new hobby.  I've done some reading up and I'm pretty sure that I've got all the pieces to this puzzle (sans syringe).  I just need to know where would be the best spot to incubate when the time is right. I've a basement and an attic that would be good I think, but with all the dust and such in these areas I'm kinda worried about contamination.  Any suggestions? I'll be using this type of fun box.....

that thing is only needed in a cold ass place. If they can sit in a room you feel comfy in they jars can just grow in that too.

It'll be my first time and want to  make sure the temperature is regulated for optimum results.  I'm just thinking about once the cakes are out of the jars and they're growing in there. I was going to drill a ton of holes in the boxes, and I'm worried about contamination at that point, where they're somewhat open to the enviorment.

yeah, just did some more reading up and i guess my real question is when they're fruiting, are they susceptible to contamination? like i said, i'm a rookie here....

In which case you want to colonize your jars at normal room temperature.

Once removed from the jars, use a shotgun terrarium per the tek.  The holes provide fresh air, which reduces the risk of contamination.

RR, I guess my only problem with just leaving them out to colonize is that room temp for me is like 65*F. I was gonna just use the incubator I posted for peace of mind, then go ahead with the shotgun terrarium. Once out of the jars, what is the temp range for the best growth?  Could I use the water heater method while the continue to grow? Of course I'd drill the holes the terrarium accordingly.  Thanks for the insight guys, I'll be needing it for this first go round.

Ok, I'm just reading that link you put on the post, and I think I'm slightly over thinking this whole thing. Simple is as simple does. It's just that it's a funny time between the seasons here and the temp and air quality fluctuate.  Plus all the dust in my attic and basement, I'm more worried about contamination during fruiting phase.
