First Time Growing: Is this the start of mycelium growth?
    #14467711 - 05/17/11 12:35 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Hello everyone... I am a first time grower and need some advice.  I purchased a kit from CGK and got spores named "Thai tanic," which I ordered from a vendor, but apparently came from Ralphster's... I inoculated exactly one week ago and I don't have the white puffy clouds of mycelium that everyone is talking about.  There is no sign of contamination, and there does appear to be some faint white areas, so I wanted to post here, with a picture, to hopefully get some help and encouragement from the experts here.  It's only been a week but I would appreciate any advice you guys have to offer!

give it another 4-5 days and you should be able to tell for sure :bigjoint:

But are you able to see the white spots that I am referring to?  Will this generally turn into the white fluffy mycelium?  My best friend doesn't have much faith in me that I can do this on my own so I'm really trying to make sure things go well...

It's too hard to tell right now and with that picture, it's too hazy.

I know your anxious and want to know for sure, but you can't know for sure until it's had a chance to grow some more. Trust me, you'll learn patience in the field of mycology!

So is it a misnomer that people get the white puffy mycelium after only a few days?

Did you pressure cook your jars? If so, then after the PC period did you wait for the jars to cool down for 24 hours, before inoculating? The cooling down period, after being PC'd, seems to be used to decrease the probability or chance of killing the spores, due to to high of a temperature, apparently, which have been inoculated into the substrate.
I usually see signs of mycelium growth within 2-4 days after inoculating. Give it a few days, as suggested already.

I actually didn't make the jars myself.  I purchased them from Cali Grow Kits where they send them to you ready for inoculation.  So I put the spores in exactly one week ago today... I have noticed that the aquarium heater I was using for incubation wasn't keeping the temperature very warm... So I think I've corrected this problem using a heating pad... So I'm hoping this will help.  I just really hope that this works!

It's normal if it takes longer. As a beginner you make some mistakes which result in slower germination. I waited 10 days with my first growth before I saw mycelium

The jar that you show in your first post of this thread appears to be a 1 pint jar. According to the CGK, their "ultra substrate jars" are 1/2 pint size. Did you take two of your 1/2 jars, which supposedly you bought from CGK, and put them in a pint jar of your own?

Without something for size reference in the pic, you can't tell whether it's 1/2 pint or full pint

Just a quick tip: Heat the room, not just one spot where you're growing. If this isn't possible, than buy a new aquarium heater. Heating pads tend to fluctuate a lot. This isn't too good for mycelium formation.

Or just chill out from worrying about temps... I've fruited in 60-65 degree temps and colonized jars in 50-60 degree temps... (cubes)

I know that it's possible, it just runs slower at low temps. I know a lot of growers do it. I'm still preferring higher temperatures. Everybody has their own methods.

true, Just saying heat pads and worrying about raising temps can lead to an increase in contams. The only real way i've seen a positive method of raising temps was when I put a very small space heater in my basement grow room that had a sensor to turn off at a certain temp.

Never got above 75 in that room...

Like I said, heating the room is the best thing to do

You, supposedly, bought a mushroom kit from caligrowkits, which as I stated before, according to their website their "ultra substrate jars" are 1/2 pint size. Therefore, you are implying that it is a 1/2 pint jar, right? I'm saying it appears to be a pint jar. I was wondering if you took two 1/2 pint jars from the CGK and put them into a 1 pint jar of your own. The point I'm making is that if you did, in fact, do this, then to me it seems like that process would make your substrate susceptible to contamination, therefore making your mycelium growth progess move along more slowly compared to just leaving the substrate in the jar after PC'ing. Slappyhappypill I though you were the guy , firtimerhyme, whatever his name is responded. My mistake.

If he did that, then the cake is for sure contaminated, and would have shown contams within the first 4-7 days i'm sure.
