slow colonization of rye jars question
    #14467358 - 05/17/11 10:57 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Ok...So I tried soaking rye grains for the first time versus the old method I used where you just put the water right in the jar and pcd them. I did these jars just about 2 weeks ago now.  I read a lot on here and I saw many people saying to soak for between 4 and 24 hours then boil.  The four batches I did I ended up soaking for between 4 and 6 hours in a mix of half brewed coffee and half water and then boiling for 20 minutes. I have no contams thus far which is great for 28 jars but they are going really slow.  Some jars are doing well and others have almost nothing going on.  In my opinion the grains look much drier than when I used the other method and I'm thinking I should have soaked them longer (24 hours) and done the 10 minute boil.  Would doing that make the grains hold more moisture than a shorter soak?  Or is the longer soak strictly to help kill off more of the endospores?

The long soak is to let the bad stuff start to colonize from spores so that the Pressure cooking will kill it since the spores can stand much higher temps, I do a 24 hour soak with some gypsum and then boil them for 10 min in the soak water before steam shaking them dry. All the moisture you want in your grain should be on the inside, the outside of my grains always look dry but the inside is hydrated, which is exactly what you want. Follow RR's method, it has always worked for me perfectly. http://www.mushroomvideos.com/Grain-Preparation

Jar on the drier side would slow down the colonising process. Optimal stable temperature also plays a big part with the speed of colonisation.
Right now my jars are also colonising slow since my aquarium heater died out. I also use the same method you did (Rinse the rye, add water and then just PC) and it seems to work fine. Everything with this method is no where near as efficient as RR's methods, but I just hate waiting for the rye to soak and simmer!!
Hope this helps.

A jar on the dry side will colonize while a jar that is too wet will not colonize at all and it will eventually contam, it is always better to have it a little too dry than too wet. I PC my grains that I use GLC on for two hours just to dry them out a little more so I can use allot of GLC on them and they have always colonized fine, I do use RR's methods though.

Gypsum makes all the difference, get some and you will fall in love.

That's true about being too dry and too wet. I'm dying to find some gypsum!
Where I am, I there's definitely a local/native name for it. So if I were to ask for gypsum, people would look at me if I'm from mars.
What is the general purpose of gypsum?
If I know what it's used for, I might be able to explain what it is.

You can find pelletized gypsum in almost any store with a garden department, it is a clay soil additive.

'Shrooms don't require cocaine to thrive but smashed up drywall will benefit your grains and substrate. I'm just saying.

Awesome, now lose the unitard and your cool, I have never used drywall, I just buy some pelletized gypsum from :cuteshit: Mart. It is just pelletized clay for gardening I would think you could find it in any store with a garden department.:crazybaby:

I was in a large home improvement store earlier and could not find any. The people who worked there were clueless.

Is there any specific brand or area in the garden department I should look for.

Also chicks dig the unitard and cocaine.

LMAO, I have all of Deathklok's albums, used to watch the cartoon all the time funny:glittershitz:

Well, I would say it should be around all of the fertilizers and other soil additives.

Where you are they may not carry it at regular stores, if they have a hydroponics store they will definitely have it there.

I would check my local garden center or a hydro shop, other than that you would just have to pay for the S&H and buy it from the net.
