pick em when you know they're aborts (cap darkens).

if you're not sure, and others are still growing, leave em be - they may be the pins of your second flush.

just remove them when you harvest all the other shrooms. they should all be ready at the same time just about. if not then rip em off.

Fleshofthegods have you ever grew before? Anyone that got aborts knows that they will start rotting if they are left unattended to.

i would sugest the moment you start to see a little darker cap then the others than more than likly its going to be an abort. Also the darker they get the closer they get to being rotten.

good helaty shroom usually start with brownish caps from my expirience.

If you are working with casings I wouldn't suggest deep scratching...it gives a very high chance of contams:

"If you have successfully harvested a good first flush, leave your casing alone in the fruiting chamber. Mist it, bring water content back up to where it was prior to the first flush, and wait for the second flush.

Do not deep scratch, unless it is having problems pinning, problems associated with overlay, which is directly related to over incubation, and a lack of air exchange.

Deep scratching after a healthy first flush is BAD INFORMATION. Pins for your first and second flush are produced during the initial intiation. If you deep scratch after harvesting the first flush, you kill all the pins for the second flush. This deep scratching at this point does two things, it prolongs the time between the first and second flush, and more importantly, it will spread any contamination that might be presently contained."

i agree.. i would just pull of shrooms and just reapply a think casing layer to the areas where shrooms have been pulled. also u will notice that the casing will start pulling from the sides. i have noticed that if you place a little casing layer there in those sides it will help the mycelium a great deal.

(Please consider that this is my first grow) 5 cakes 4 casings

my problem is that if the shrooms have become fully mature they have usually sporulated and then all the pins under the casings become purplish black...then its so difficult to see the aborts they all look the same so i just pluck them all out and put a new layer of casing.

that way i am sure i am set back by some time...but its the fist time so i did what i figured and erred on the side of caution..
