I have a question

Didn't want to post, but I have 4 fully colonized wbs jars and I have a monotub that takes 15 quarts of water to fill up to he top of the four inch mark. I was planning on using all my quarts of spawn with two bricks of coir and maybe two quarts of vermiculite. Should that work ok? Ratios have me a bit confused

Yes. [4 quarts spawn] : [11 quarts bulk substrate] ratio is slightly over a 1:3 ratio. If you account for extra space in the jar (most people only fill up 3/4 of the jar) you'd still be sitting at a 1:4 ratio.

I like a much higher ratio so that it colonizes faster, I am lazy, and very impatient. I use 3 quart jars on a half brick of coir lol. 6 for a full brick...
And sillicybin, I think you miscalculated the ratio, he said 2 full bricks of coir for 4 quarts...
One brick of coir makes about 10 quarts doesn't it?

You're right, good catch. I was calculating based on going to the 4 inch mark on the tub (15 quarts.) I don't go higher than a 4 inch substrate depth, personally.

Im confused.
I need 15-16 quarts. I have 4 quarts in spawn and yall say 4-5quarts for one brick of coir.
So how many bricks of coir and quarts of verm should I use.
Help is needed planning on doing it today or tomorrow because I dont want my colonized jars to sit around.

Most people say you need 4-5 quarts of spawn for one brick of coir. A single brick of coir should expand to 10 quarts of substrate.
If you use: 1 coir brick (~10 quarts) + your spawn (~3-4 quarts) ------------------------ ~13-14 quarts of total substrate.
That will almost get you to your 4" line on your tub. You can expand some of the second brick to fill the rest and still have a decent ratio if you want, or just keep it at 3" and some change on the substrate.
Honestly, if you've never spawned to bulk before, you might try making a smaller tub with half that spawn first if you don't have any more spawn coming behind it. If you throw all your eggs in one basket on your first attempt, you might be disappointed.

Ok thanks for the advice. Should I add any vermiculite to the substrate or no?

Since you are a little low on the spawn end I personally would not add any verm. I get the same results either way. If you do decide to add vermiculite I would only add 1 qt.

I agree with Mushaboom. I don't notice much of a difference in adding verm to coir either.

Verm is to retain moisture, I use Damion5050's elementary coir tek which calls for 2 quarts verm 5 quarts water and a brick of coir.
I make 2 small tubs with that using 3 quarts of spawn for each tub, colonizes fast and works wonderfully.

Ok. I just did Damion5050's tek with one brick of coir and just one quart of verm. I added 4 and a half quarts of boiling water, but the coir doesnt seem to damp its just airy and fluffy should I add more water?

Did you use a tub and let the boiling water sit in the tub with the verm and coir for 1/2 to a full hour? After about 30 minutes you need to stir to evenly distribute the moisture.

Yeah just thought it would be a lot damper than it is.

It needs to be field capacity. Basically, If you get a clump in your hand then squeeze really hard you should have a little stream for a second followed by a few drips. If you squeeze lightly you should just get a few drips.

I would boil some water then add until it reaches field capacity then let it sit. Only add a little at a time, you can always add more water but once it's in, there is no taking it out.

The water will go to the bottom, better stir it very good, like with one of those paint stirrers that attach to a drill...
I use a heavy metal grill spatula. Good forearm workout. The longer it sits the more water will be at the bottom.
