Is this salvia baby doomed? ALIVE!! Updated 8/23
    #14463142 - 05/16/11 04:46 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Just received this and the pedro or torch's pictured.
I'm no green thumb, but I'm guessing that salvia plant doesn't stand a chance?

It is somewhat drying out and as you can see, it got snapped in half, can I clean it up and save it somehow?

Should I replant both the roots and the cleaned up upper half?
Looking for advice on possibly trying to save this tragedy.

I was shipped two tubed salvias that were in ROUGH shape, neither had any nodes and had rotted halfway down. Put that guy in some soil, water him well, and keep him at 100% humidity. I did that and one of the Salvias that I had received, and he made it out alright and created a node. Its doing pretty well ATM. Salvia is alot tougher than people give it credit for.

You'd be surprised. I think that Salvia could make a come back. I've seen worse turn into full bushy plants. Worth a shot especially if you have a green thumb.

Gently clean and replant both sections of stem.
If the leaves on the top portion do not recover cut them off.
Keep your soil somewhat damp and do not bother with a humidity dome/tent (seriously).

Thanks for the advice folks, I got em cleaned up and potted, sitting in a windowsill and gave em a bit of water.

Here's to hoping!

Thats a gorgeous orchid in your signature Deekay.

Is that a lily in your avatar? I love lilies, so much so that I named my daughter Lily. I've never seen one like that with so much lack of color, is it some type of albino strain or something?

There's still hope, Salvia can come back from some pretty dire circumstances. I'd say you have a good chance if you give it some tlc

Hopefully this thread will help inspire your efforts in keeping it alive

So...humidity tent on this thing or not?

Receiving conflicting advice on this.

Salvia natively grows in a humid environment, but depending on your cuttings previous growing conditions it may be acclimatized to somewhat lower levels of humidity (like my own).

What's the weather like where you are now? Do you know what conditions the cutting was in before it was cut?

A humidity tent probably wouldn't be necessary if you have warm to hot weather, just keep the soil damp & the evaporating moisture near the ground should be enough. (& if it is hot maker sure you don't let it get any direct sunlight)

I live in new england, so the weather has lows around 45 and highs around 65 right now.

Not real humid, but not exactly arid either.
It is indoors though where the temp probably doesn't drop below 50. I don't have a hygrometer at the moment, all my scientific shit is packed away in storage, so its hard for me to gauge the humidity in the house.

The only reason I'd suggest one is, I've seen Salvia cuttings that had no leaves wither and die in conditions that would normally be no problem. If you just received it from an online vendor there is a very high chance it's been grown in 100%-ish humidity, so the shock of lower humidity as well as the need to regrow itself entirely will almost surely kill it. It's not a terrible amount of effort to keep the Salvia under a 2L pop bottle or something else to keep high humidity, and it may just mean the difference between recovery and dead...ness.

It wasn't from a vendor. I will try to find out if it was recently in high humidity.

If you choose to use a humidity tent I would only suggest a freezer bag flipped over each cutting.

Also, my signature and avatar are both photos from the 2011 Philadelphia Flower Show (check out my gallery).
The lily was actually a creamy green color, I had never seen one like it before in my life. :ooo:

with the cactus', just let them dry out if they havent been drying already for a couple weeks, then just stick them root down into semi-moist soil, and just give it some time and they should all take off. the salvia is unfortunately, probably too far gone at this point, but miracles do happen! good luck!

Mother Nature never ceases to amaze me.

Look what has become of that beaten down, abused and broken little salvia plant.

As you can see, both the rooted half and the top half have both sprouted new leaves. They've both been under a humidity tent and getting a little water ever few days or so.

Should I leave them as they've been or what?

Looks good.

I'd leave them until you get some more growth. You could slowly start reducing humidity by adding holes the bag if you'd like.

What is climate right now in your area? Salvia really prefers to be outside if the climate is right.
