I don't think likening them to "landmines" is appropriate. From what I can tell there hasn't been any injuries... unfortunately.

china doesnt have the same requirements that the US does regarding organics and even in the US a total of 5% of materials used on a crop can be synthetic, this includes pesticides and crap like forchlorfenuron with large growers like ConAgra and HJHienz petitioning for more and more to be used every day so while we dont see it as organic, under the current regulations it is legal to list it as such
if you buy from large chains like Whole Foods, definately check the labels on the crap you buy, if it's produced anywhere but the US, put it back. at least int he US there are inspections

this is why I didnt become a farmer...
That and the lack of any goverment aid for australian farmers. Unlike that of various other countries. Not sure if the have such a program in the U.S?
people want organic, home grown produce and at the same time want it cheaper than overseas competitors.

what's really screwed is that in the US, large conglomerate owned farms that dont need the cash can get millions in subsidies and grants but the small farmers have a hard time receiving the funds and when they do they tend to be small. the USDA attaches the funds to a parcel of land, not the farmer applying, if the farmer sells and it's developed as a residential area then the home owners get the funds even if they arent growing anything but grass

Unless you're a 10th generation farmer who has owned their land since the colonization of Australia, you're in for a tough battle. A recurring trend of flood and drought in Aus usually means that smaller family run properties are sold off during tough times to the farming giants.
At the moment the dairy industry is doing it tough as the major super market chains push prices down on milk to muscle other competing grocery stores.
I think we should all bend over and accept the corrupt overseas producers as our overlords, who are inadvertently destroying competition with the plan to one day eliminate all competition and jack up prices at the mercy of the western world.
Realising this 2 years ago, I promplty quit my agricultural studies to persue a career in advertising. THEY CANT IMPORT THAT

I agree, buy local whenever you can! I don't see what's wrong with forchlorfenuron. It's a plant hormone, so what's the big fuss about? It's also approved for use here in the states.
