as far as must have apps, that depends entirely on you (welcome to linux) :awesome:

i use Gimp, Inkscape, and Fontmatrix on a daily basis. i do a lot of graphic design though.. and yes, i prefer Gimp and Inkscape to Photoshop and Illustrator.

Depends on the graphic design work you do, logos and vectors and simple text and blending your good. But I like to fuck around to much and if it wasnt for not running photoshop directly off of ubuntu I would use it way more. Every time I boot its like:

CHOOSE:
WINDOWS
UBUNTU

and i make that obama laughing meem face thing. Gotta learn all those commands and shit....ugh.

Word. It sucks. But I see how it could work for nitwits using tablets.

i think the way unity's menu bar displays an active app's preferences (a la os x) with the addition of integrating an active maximized window's close and minimize buttons seems like a pretty intelligent way of maximizing screen real estate (though perhaps less so on a desktop with multiple monitors)... i didn't care much for the rest of it though, the dock seemed very incomplete and totally disliked the all encompassing unity button finder thing.

I like some Unity features, but this first implementation sucks and I can't use it. It doesn't work well with virtual desktops and nothing happens when I right click on stuff. It's incomplete or sucks.

What I don't like about gnome is the lack of a (decent) vertical panel. Modern monitors have lots of horizontal space so I want my window panel on the left or right side, not top or bottom. I know there are other solutions, but I haven't found one I really like. Let's hope gnome3 fixes this.

ill agree with this.

im not a huge fan of OS X but i think the global menu bar is very smart.

I run Linux Mint. It's basically ubuntu with all the codecs installed by default. Actually, I just checked my uptime and version. I am at 245 days of uptime and running Mint 7, which hasn't even been supported since October of 2010. I'd say it's amazingly stable.

The installer for ubuntu has had a check box during installation to download and install the non-free media formats since meerkat or lucid.

Mint isn't just codecs.. the simple fact that the desktop is arranged in a sane, logical way is reason enough to use it over Ubuntu.

im not normally a fan of pre-built distros but i really love Mint.

I aware.  I think the desktop is arranged in a way that makes the transition from windows easier in Mint, but aside from that, I think both just serve to get one up and running... the next step is to customize your desktop environment to your liking
