By passing a city ordinance, the city of Holdenville has done something the state Legislature did not do this year.
Holdenville’s city council on May 3 passed an ordinance that bans the sale of allergy medicine with pseudoephedrine that can be used to make methamphetamine.
A similar proposal was not heard by the Legislature this year. But now, other cities in Oklahoma may consider following Holdenville’s lead.
Holdenville passed the ordinance unanimously after being approached with information about pseudoephedrine from Claremore resident David Starkey who says he has taken on a fight against methamphetamine for the sake of children — innocent bystanders who can be victims of fires caused by cooking the illegal drug, he said.
Starkey is continuing on a journey to travel across Oklahoma and ask city councils to pass ordinances that would ban all allergy medicine that comes in a dry tablet form and contains pseudoephedrine and is sold without a prescription.
Holdenville Police Chief Keith Wardlow said he hopes the new law, which takes effect June 3, not only cuts down meth production, but also reduces the number of crimes associated with meth use, such as copper theft and burglaries committed by addicts.
Supporting the effort The Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs supports Starkey’s efforts.
“This is a grassroots effort on the local level to ban the ingredients to make meth,” said Mark Woodward, Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs spokesman.
He said Oregon in 2005 banned the sale of dry tablet allergy pills with pseudoephedrine without a prescription.
“Is this going to stop the problem? No, but it is going to slow it down,” Woodward said.
Not all people who are opposed to methamphetamine usage agree that taking a product away from the average consumer is the right way to fight the problem, however.
One step ahead Pharmacist Dani Lynch, owner of Thrifty Pharmacy in north Oklahoma City, said she thinks meth dealers always will be one step ahead of the system, and more regulations only hurt the consumer. She said allergy medicine in the dry tablet form is more effective for allergy sufferers than gel caps.
“This is ridiculous. We don’t need any more government regulations,” Lynch said.
In Edmond, Larry Adams, owner of Barrett Drug Center since 1978, said he sells so few boxes of allergy medicine with dry tablet pseudoephedrine now that any change would not greatly affect his business. But he doesn’t think banning the dry tablets is really going to stop the meth problem.
“My personal feeling is it’s not going to accomplish a lot,” Adams said. “To me it is like putting a Band-Aid on a great big wound.”
Starkey, who describes himself as an average Oklahoman who is furious about meth labs, said he watched two friends ruin their lives with the drug. He said too often innocent people can be burned in a meth fire.
Starkey, 51, of Claremore, is self-employed and has a 4-year-old child, and says he knows he does not have funds to fight pharmaceutical company lobbyists. A similar proposal to ban dry tablet allergy pills did not advance in the Oklahoma Legislature this year.
“I’m after the shake and bake meth labs. I can’t save the world, but a lot of money is wasted on meth lab cleanup,” Starkey said.
Woodward said in 2010 there were 818 meth labs busted in Oklahoma.
In central and western Oklahoma, law enforcement agencies mostly battle the Mexican meth known as “ice,” which is mass-produced in Mexico.
But, the small “shake and bake” meth labs cause a lot of collateral damage to houses, apartments and other buildings.
The bureau spent $800,000 cleaning up meth labs in 2010, Woodward said.
Woodward said he hopes Starkey’s efforts pay off.
“We don’t have to guess about whether this will work, we know it will work,” Woodward said.

The risk of explosion of the labs is what they think is wrong with meth? What about all these cities with chemical plants, or fireworks factories? Oh yeah those aren't illegal drugs so those explosions don't matter.

I don't get it, what about methamphetamine for kids?
As mentioned above, Desoxyn is licensed to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (or ADHD for short) in children six years old and older. Desoxyn® (methamphetamine hydrochloride) is a prescription medication used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It is also used for short-term obesity treatment.
So what, they ban allergy medicine?
This is like, 2c-e is bad because bromo-dragonfly killed people. So lets ban 2c-e right?

This is upsetting that any state would take the medicine away from the patients just to aid the "War on Drugs". I suffer from bad allergy attacks often and the only allergy meds that work are the ones with ephedrine. I can take Zyrtek continuously throughout the year and only suffer mild attacks but I can take Zyrtek D at the first sign of an attack and avoid it altogether. Timing is crucial but I don't like taking a pill every day.

If you had licensed labs synthesizing and distributing methamphetamine, you wouldn't have people cooking it in their homes.
