So i ran into a problem and would like some opinions before I do it all over...

First of all, my jars were only steralizing for about an hour when something came up and i had to take them off the stove. As I understand it, they need to be steralized for an hour and a half. Is the hour alright? Can they be re-steralized for 90 minutes or do I need to do everything over?
Also I used masking tape to cover the holes, not realizing that I had micropore tape. Is the masking tape alright or should it be done over with the micropore tape?

Were they Pressure cooked or Boiled????? (If PC'd, 60 minutes typically is sufficent.)
--Re-sterilizing CAN BE DONE. you can re-do them if you feel the need. I believe this is called fractional steralization.
--As far as the tape goes I wouldn't worry about it as long as you had foil over the jars when steralizing...I personally don't cover the holes with anything (even though I have 20 rolls of micropore tape.)

I've used the pf tek and the jars were boiled and steamed (I don't have a pressure cooker). However, the lids were on the pots, and were also sealed with foil to help keep steam inside the pot. When they were taken off the stove, they stayed sealed until about an hour later and the pot was still boiling hot. (Not sure if that makes a difference. But I was hoping that maybe it would make up for the half hour that it wasn't on the stove.)

Really, they should be good. If you aren't extremely strapped for inoculation solution I'd go ahead and go for it.. If you are go ahead and resteralize the jars. But 1 hr 15 min should be fine.
~Still going to add that steralization is by by by by by by far one of the most important thing when it comes growing.
All steps are important but any kind of contam and ur pretty much fUqEd
EDIT: Did you have foil over your jar lids?

is the foil on top of the lid supposed to be really tight? how are you supposed to know if it's keeping the water out or not?

IMHO i've did this before, and both times I did this I got contams. These are actually the only times I've ever gotten contams too surprising enough.
I was at the 60 minute mark just like you, then I did a full 90 minute, the other time i did 45 minutes, then had to leave and did the other 90 minutes. if you got the spores to spare you can go ahead and do it... if not id start over.

If you have the stuff to make the jars over again just do it. Its not worth the hassle and the whole not knowing thing. Just empty the jars and remix the brf/verm if you got it.

tight. u can tell if there wetter when ur done. just make sure the water level dont go up more then 1/2 way up the jar.
This is very bad advice. If the water goes 1/2 way up half-pint jars, it WILL get in when the water boils. It's been very long established that the jars should be elevated totally out of the water. It's the steam which sterilizes.

Also bad advice. The tape is there to protect the top of the verm barrier from holding contaminant spores after the jars are removed from the steam. If tape isn't used, contaminants WILL settle on the top of the verm barrier where they can be pushed into the rice flour below by the needle during inoculation. RR

All it would set you behind is one day, rather than a couple week's if you get contam'd. It's not like you have to remake new jars or anything. Go with the gut

GL mang
I still use micropore tape, for at least a good majority of the colonization period

i just use metal tape over the whole top(easier then pieces to get off) leave the lid cracked, put in steam pot with foil, steam for 90 min, leave in pot over night in the oven, remove and sterilize area then putting into a sterilized glove box for inoculation(closeing each lid as i take them out with the foil still on), after i knock them up i have just left them in a closet cabinet just fine. but that's me, i know i am aseptic during the whole process before i set them into the closet.

do you use the short 1/2 pint jars or the tall 1/2 pints? i think shorts would be more susceptible to water coming in if you start boiling when the water level is halfway up the jar.
doesn't make sense to me to risk over watering your jars when you don't need to.
