It seems to me that words are an illusion. Describe a color. Can you?
Visual communication is the next wave I think, perhaps something along that line. Nothing is really what they are called.. your name is not really you. Answering to it merely gives someone power over you. I think words are like a spell. You are sending out vibrations from yourself onto others, every word has even the most minute effect.

I can agree with you somewhat... words can be a form of an illusion. You can't truely decribe a color to someone. Typically you say a word like "red" and it's automatically painted in a mental picture in your mind. But what about a blind person?

I wonder what a blind person would see on mushrooms.

I once read a trip report by a blind woman in Hawaii.  It was on The Shroomery, but I haven't been able to locate it since the first time I read it.  I unfortunately don't remember too much about it, though!

Words are fuckin' crazy, though!  I have a lot to say about words, but right now I cannot think of the words to say all I have to say, so hopefully I'll post more sometime later when I am not so tired.

Namaste.

Words only get you so far. If you want direct communication with no mis-interpretations, it's all about telepathy.

Words are arbitrary. Meaning is substantiated with intent.
"Colorless Green Ideas Sleep Furiously." -Chomsky
Syntactic structure appears fine, eh? But due to the arbitrary meaning assigned to each word, the idea is nothing but a fart in the wind... I've caught wind of it and smell something funky. What will the next step in the evolution of consciousness hold for language? Perhaps nothing will be arbitrary in the future, and pure intention will be vocalized by one and visualized by another...

Sometimes I can communicate and connect with people way better through laughs and other sounds than 'words'

Insert an "I think" mentally in front of eveything I say that seems sketchy, because I certainly don't KNOW much. Also; feel free to yell at me.

You are so right. Words can only express so much. I would say the use of vocal language is a characteristic of lowly underevolved species in this universe. The importance of spoken words is a paradigm that needs to be smashed. Whenever I'm at a loss for words I find myself trying to convey my thoughts/feelings mentally to another person, as if a telepathic reflex kicks in. But then when the person asks why I'm not responding to them they think I'm just socially inept. Go figure.

One more thing about words: be wary of anyone who uses a lot of them.

I don't think words describe something, its the emotions the speaker puts behind the words that do the true explaining. Words are just ways for us to get our thoughts out, words aren't our thoughs, just carriers. Kind of how, the chair your sitting on isn't a chair. It's a representation of the idea of a chair. Kind of abstract but it's the best I could do to explain what I'm thinking.

I have a fun game I play with myself when I'm alone: I try to make a completely neutral noise that has no meaning and connotes nothing. It's impossible.

That is interesting. I think all sounds have a meaning. It is just that the english language is not very melodic and quite ugly, talking "gibberish" is much more fun. As far as telepathy goes.. I think it would be very hard to accomplish unless you were in tune with the other person. Especially in this electronic age.. imagine all the crap soaring around and through you right now. Even if someone was calling to you, you would have to be able to pick up on it. Good luck with that.

I think I see what your saying, like to us a chair is a place to sit, and other thoughts can come after that.
But to the chair it is just wood and cushions and /or whatever it considers itself to be.. or to the chair we are sitters what we call ourselves is not there concern..of course we created the chair..and chairs dont think..I think..
Oh well,
Good post!

The most simplest word, yet the longest dictionary definition, and the most meaningful (IMO) :

Be.

Words are labels for what we experience. A chair is not we experience as a chair, it is the representation of its 'chairness'. And like you said, it is dependent, not an inherent quality. A chair could function that way to a human, or a bed for a cat, or a place to set your bag, or a stool to reach something...
In true nature, with out language, which is made up of stereotypic language, there is no characteristic, there is not quality, there is no description. It just ____. Buddhism calls this emptiness. And the only way to define it is by what it is not.
Lots of Buddhist applications to this discussion.

Emptiness is Form, and Form is Emptiness.

a couple of heinleinisms...
the dictionary has 28 definintions of "to be" --- and every one of them false-to fact...
the long words are easy --- it is the short words that are slippery...
