Massachusetts mayor wants 'Lazy Cakes' brownies banned

MA mayor wants relaxation brownie off shelves
May 13, 2011 - whdh.com

BOSTON -- It looks like a simple snack cake, but the brownie inside the wrapper is causing quite the battle.

The product's name is Lazy Cakes and the makers sell it as a relaxation brownie. But a Massachusetts mayor wants the sweet off store shelves.

"This is candy with a drug in it," said Dr. Caroline Apovian, Boston Medical Center.

They’re called Lazy Cakes - brownies designed to help adults chill out.

Mixed in with the chocolate is the sleep aid melatonin - that's the hormone your body makes to help you sleep.

But the amount of melatonin that helps adults relax can be potentially dangerous for kids.

"An adult dosage of melatonin could be extremely detrimental in a child and cause drowsiness and fatigue. It’s as if you're giving your child a Valium," said Apovian.

So you'd think these sweet snacks would be kept out of reach for kids - right?

But in store after store in Boston and around the state, 7NEWS found Lazy Cakes right out where children could grab them.

Next to candy bars in one shop, and right near the cookies in another store.

The mayor of Fall River wants to ban the sale of Lazy Cakes in his city.

He says the relaxation brownie is marketed toward young people.

"Even though the products says it’s not intended for children's use, its psychedelic packaging and its cartoon character known as “lazy Larry” indicate otherwise," said Mayor William Flanagan, Fall River.

The company that makes Lazy Cakes told 7NEWS their brownies "include items that anyone can purchase at any health food or vitamin store."

And the company does "recommend that lazy cakes be enjoyed by adults only."

You can see pretty clearly on the brownies the label reads "for adults only: not suitable for children."

And if a kid drinks too much caffeine his heart will explode, better than falling asleep.

I take melatonin as a sleep aid, Ive quadrupled the dosage and all it does it make me more sleepier, this is a bunch of bullshit.

yeah... because everyone knows that the point of taking melatonin isn't to become drowsy or fatigued...
They must be really desperate if they're going after melatonin, but they forgot to mention how chemically similar it is to DMT!

My local CBS station is really playing these up. They've been advertising their story for the past three days or so. They have a really evil-sounding guy doing the whole voiceover bit. If I was ascared wittle granny who didn't know any better, I'd totally believe that these were evil, disgusting things sold to prey on our children.

I'd probably rather give my kid some melatonin then say.... Tylenol PM, Nyquil, ambien, or any such drug. The beauty of melatonin is it is an herbal drug free alternative to other sleep aids that is produced naturally in your brain to begin with.

Mayors in two New England towns try to put a stop to the new craze sweeping the land, the scourge of melatonin brownies. Melatonin is a hormone, produced by the human body. It is also called the sleep hormone, as it is secreted by the brain and makes individuals feel drowsy. The concern is over kids being taken in by the marketing of melatonin laced goods, which may contain doses too high for kids to deal with. Here is the proof: New England towns looking to ban melatonin brownies.

i take melatonin as a sleep aid on a regular basis. it doesnt even make me tired it just makes getting up in the morning much much easier. i also find that the dosage really doesn't matter, i feel like taking 1mg has the same exact effect as 3-5mg.

I think the only real danger here is the fact that they decided to make it into some baked treat the some young child/infant or whatever could mistake for regular food and... pass out out I guess?

From what I've read it's close to impossible to overdose on melatonin(a couple people did some experiments with extremely high doses), I'm not even sure how many mg is in one these but when I take it I usually just take the 10mg "super strength" tablets because I struggled with severe issues at night getting a good nights sleep for many years, but that that's besides the point.

To eat a potentially lethal amount of melatonin from somehow unknowingly eating the most likely clearly labeled/instruction included packaging would require hundreds? or more of them, which I imagine scientifically you'd either throw up from that much "lazy cake brownie" overflowing your stomach or simply pass out from the melatonin.

On an unrelated note I have no idea why the fuck they would even make "melatonin cakes" with such a stupid fucking name. The name itself and obnoxious "stoneresque" packaging does nothing but make it appear to be some type of substance of abuse by millions of people with nothing better to do then cause a shit fit. I sort of agree with the mayors logic here, because I don't see why the melatonin gelatin caps that come in 3, 5, and 10mg strengths weren't sufficient? Whoever is responsible for the marketing and packaging should be blamed for not really thinking that through.

Melatonin has little to no effect. You can read Shulgin's report on it in PiHKAL (I think.) They should put doxylamine in it. That'll knock you out like something crazy.

whats the big deal. they say quite clearly that it is for adults only and they also list the ingredients, the active ingredients are melatonin, valerian root, and rose hips.  maybe they need to put that "this product has not been evaluated by the fda" lable on it like other alternative medications and energy drinks.

Isn't it one of those kind of sleep aid supplements thats like, meh, i guess it works? Valerian root? This isn't drugs. I thought it was going to be a medical marijuana brownie. Its supplements.

No, Melatonin is Melatonin, not a fucking benzo ? Its like giving your child Melatonin.....

This all makes a whole lot of sense though, don't you think? We blindly ban many many chemicals without a real reason too, but still....this is just hilarious to see such a stink made over fucking melatonin

Such a weird product, considering if there is sugar in it-it will probably hype you up for a bit before you really crash and just feel tired and not ready for sleep-just sugar crash.

Melatonin really helps little for what people generally try to take it for. The best use of melatonin is a sleep cycle shift-and the effectiveness is seen better in after a few days of use, but do not use it constantly.

Instead of taking melatonin, it is much better to just not expose yourself to light for about an hour before you normally would go to bed. You will have about as much as your body will make. If you wake up during the night, do not check your phone, and avoid exposure to light. Such a healthy pattern will not only make you happier from better sleep, but the body will benefit as serotonin and melatonin have some sort of conversion between night and day. I forget the exact system.

I would say it is actually quite moronic to eat these cakes during the day or at night. Sugar disrupts proper sleep, and during the day-you will just fuck with your sleep cycle.

People really don't under melatonin enough, as shown with this mayor. Seriously, where do you get this douche bags? If I went public with some sort of statement like this, I would lose all credit. Watch this guy get reelected.

If the guy is really caring about what kids could eat, check out school lunch systems. I really wish I could send him a personal message of how dumb he is, but the human proxies will save his precious ego.
