Anyone out there play the Sitar?

I love playing mine! It took me a while to get the hang of tuning and stringing it, but now it's not much different than working on a guitar. I love all of the drones and tones it makes by just strumming the "pick", or plectrum, across the strings. Unlike the guitar, you can just sit there playing nonsense, and it still sounds nice! Sooner or later, I'll learn how to play the authentic Indian Raga's, but for now I just like to play whatever sounds good!

The total cost was about $350 ( including a case, strings, picks, ect. )

Ooooo... Man I want one of those. I always assumed they'd be impenetrably difficult to learn to play though. I just started playing guitar a few years back and I am ready to move on to a new instrument... Thanks for helping me make my decision!

I play!
The sitar is a beautiful instrument with an incredibly rich sound. But learning how to play ragas in the authentic fashion is incredibly difficult. Nothing in Western musical education can prepare you for it.
If you like sitar music, definitely check out recordings by Budhaditya Mukherjee. This guy is the most incredible virtusoic player I have ever heard. He makes Ravi Shankar sound like your old aunt Millie strumming her banjo.
I can post more info if you're interested.

i love the sound of the sitar. i know how to emulate the sound on my guitar, but it is not the same. i don't know where to look to buy one though. i have seen them on ebay, but i don't have much faith in buying instruments on ebay, due to past experiences though. does anyone know of a good place to find a decent sitar? if you have gotten a good one on ebay let me know please. i just don't really know where to look.

Oooh, sitars on ebay . . . not a good idea.
The best sitar makers are obviously in India. Only problem is that they don't have websites and don't sell online.
The best source for sitars in the US is the Ali Akbar College of Music Store
http://www.aacm.org/shop/sitar.html
You can browse around for other stuff as well. The prices are of course quite a bit higher than what you'd pay in India, but if you can't make it out to India, this is the best way to get a true quality instrument at a reasonable price.
