Found these today growing in some mulch. There all on the larger side of subs that I have found in the past, and are incredibly sun bleached and are more dome shaped then flat, they are also much paler then other subs I've found. I'm 95% sure there subs because of the feel of them and the blue bruising. I'm just a bit thrown off by the gills because of how pale they are. I'm assuming the gills go pale after the release spores? (I've tried to do spore prints on them but there not leaving anything)

Tip #1 : You are on the Shroomery, the wealth of knowledge about what you are looking for can be aquired here very easily by using the search function, I suggest you try.
#2 : Know thy sub, learn what this mushrooms needs to grow. The time for subs is now. Looking in grass in mostly useless, these are woodlovers, you NEED dead wood.
The council is your friend, and so are woodchips, they have a relationship, just like the shrooms and the chips. Next to the motorway you will often see flax and shit sourounded by woodchips, these are pretty much the best areas to search, just park out of pig-sight.
#3 : Be stealthy when you hit public patches, or even motorway patches when the cars can see you, dont be afraid to get down and commando around. As much as it sucks, NZ pigs are onto shrooming, and some of them will A-class slam you into the cell of oppression.
#4, the most important in my books. Never give up, never. The first time you find actives you will truly appreciate what all the effort was for, and after that this will all become easy, just keep trying.

This thead's inspirational, I want in!! I haven't been so enthused this season as last year I went way too hard but all this sub-dicksizing has awoken my competitive side. Back in the '90's, before digital cameras could cheaply document such finds, me and some friends ran into what I now realise was just a patch of p.subs, one of which was the size of a saucer! I kid you not, this thing was huge!! It was in Chch after a week of solid rain and we were smoking weed at a park. I noticed the shrooms from 50m away, and having picked gold tops before, I knew they were the right colour. The bruising was unmistakable but I thought they must have been a different species as they were fucking huge.
Anyway, I haven't found anything that spectacular since, but this thread has me inspired to try.

nature can be intense and so bountiful at times. I also witnessed a heck of a sight in the late 90's out at riverhead, deep in the forest some mates and I stumbled across a patch about 20 square meters wide, just littered with P. Aucklandii, some of them absolutely monstrous, and some of them had mycelium frosting around the edges of the caps. By the time we got back home the mycelium had literally started growing over what was in the bag, it was quite unbelievable, but I didn't realise how special that sight was untill I started looking again some ten years later. The area has since been logged and young trees sit there now, Id be lucky to find a couple of Aucklandii these days I suppose in another 25 years the same area might put on a similar show again.
Much easier these days to just go rumbling through chipped gardens.
But P. Aucklandii are the most beautiful of all the Psilo's imo, and when they grow en mass its emotional

Damn, i forgot to keep my eyes open lately. I usually only find really small patches in this town,
Mycorrhiza, do you know what type of woodchips those are that you spread over your garden?
I tried this a year or two ago I went out and brought $10 of woodchips from a landscaper and spread them around, put some caps in there face down... but nothing happened.
I was wondering, do they need a bit of sunlight? (i had mine in a dark place). .. . and do you water them every day if they don't rain? I guess you only need a light covering of woodchips for it to work or do they need to be pretty deep?
thanks for any info you can give. ive tried growing them from buckets too just with a pile of woodchips taken from the bush (with some already grown) but that never seemed to work either they just got eaten up by snails.

similarly to Blazer, I kept seeing good clusters of pins in a spot i knew from last year. but every time I went back a couple of days later to check progress they had gone! And I thought the mycelium/mulch looked a little disturbed (actually i first thought it was those digging blackbirds!) Then saw quite a fucken big hole where I saw some about 1/4 developed ones the day before.
So the dick was getting them when they were barely or not even passed the veil stage, and really disturbing/uprooting the mycelium. Rather then cutting the fully grown ones and letting good clusters develop. Plus he is preventing spore dispersal in an area full of perfect habitats.
Never mind... there are plenty around for everyone if they know what they are doing.

Subsistence said: Has anyone found subaeruginosa or semilanceata around the Nelson region? I'm not looking for exact details I just want to know if there is hope. There is a brief reference in John W Allan's 'Magic mushrooms in Australia and New zealand' but I am keen to hear it from someone first hand. Peace
Looks like I have answered my own question. Indeed Subaeruginosa do grow in the region, in the usual type of habitat on woodchips under Rhododendrons.
I found only one solitary specimen and I harvested some mycelium to experiment with cardboard/woodchips at home.
Can anyone tell me if Subs need a frost to trigger fruiting? We have not had a frost in Nels yet but there has been plenty of rain.
Cheers

P.S. I just found a 4m tall, multibranched san pedro cactus beside the empty house next door to mine.. So fu*#ing beautiful!
If anyone is looking for cuttings let me know, i'll sell cheaper than the common tradeMe prices.
Some of the stem is around 15cm diameter!
Peace
