Not sure if you guys already use this resource but its great for seeing the rainfall over the last week: http://www.bom.gov.au/cgi-bin/silo/rain_maps.cgi?map=points&variable=totals&area=nsw&period=week®ion=centralcoast&time=latest
Im thinking of heading up to the blue mountains this weekend, but there hasnt been much rain at all, anyone reckon it will still be worthwhile trip to practice identifying subs?

i think if they are there, they will be there due to the mulch that retained the moisture from the last rain. I wouldnt mind just checking out potential spots even if there isnt any subs.
Hm does anyone know if trails (bushwalks) or garden beds and parks are better at blue mountains.

Picking pins is bad in general... BUT if they are completely dried out and look aborted, then ill sometimes pick them. Usually its best to just leave them as the extra weight youll get from them is so negligible its not really worth it.
Think about it as looking after your patch for years to come rather than getting a quick fix sorta thing.
Anyway, todays hunt:

And this little thing i found:

Not sure what this is, it looked like it was almost glowing red. Went from an orange colour at the top to a deep rich red at the bottom. Bumpy texture all over it. Reminds me of Hydnellum peckii...

Your last one might be Tubifera ferruginosa.

Went for a quick walk this morning to take some pics. I'm pretty disappointed. Had my camera on the wrong setting and stuffed half of my pictures up Here's some that turned out semi decent:

They look like dinosaur eggs ouijah. Nice pictures btw.
We went on a hunt today at blue mountains and got nothing at all. Half the time we didnt know where to look. But i think i found a promising spot for next time wen it rains.
All the shrooms we found were dry or rotten. where is the rain?!

Ok thanks Johnny, yeah they were definitely dried out and exposed to the sun. I left many pins untouched.

Hey there buddy
Look for places with frost at night and around 11C in the day, hopefully the frost will melt and create enough moist spots for our little friends. Then it's just a matter of looking for the right vegetation that retain and give off lots of water, i.e pine or gumtree-like plants with some low grass surrounding the trails.
But yes, rain would make it so much easier to find more. All we can do is wait, but I got a feeling when the rain does come, it's going to be quite a show.
Take care and keep looking!

Yes I know these things. But when you have cleared the spot, frost isn't going to help, need some deep penetrating water. I don't want to have to go looking for new spots, would prefer that the ones I know keep producing.

i swear i can see some baby subs in your first pic,
and in the others all i see is orange stem, cant see any white ones,
but i'd say you found some subs in the first one and the rest look like Galerina's

so they always bruise blue? because i think i picked one near those pins and it didnt bruise... not 100% sure
im getting excited again!

hey linds they do indeed look like subs, but they look a bit orange as mentioned before. what colour are the stems? subs have a clear white stem, and it kinda looks a bit stringy, kinda looks like this (but white) i often see shrooms that look like the ones you posted around where subs are growing, but they're not subs. you'll see mine on saturday, they're a fucking clear blue when they're right. you'll know once you've seen it. if you want, pick the bigger ones before you leave on friday/saturday and ill have a look at them for you.
