What are some of the best movies?
    #14455268 - 05/15/11 08:28 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Here's two that I've seen in the past year that I highly highly recommend to anyone. These movies had great stories and were extremely well done:

-The Shawshank Redemption
-Changeling

I have to add Big Fish to my list, and also Oh Brother Where Art Thou

French new wave is definitely not for everyone. Films like 400 Blows and Hiroshima mon amour are interesting in how they affected the progression of art house cinema for many reasons but as far as something you want to throw in on a lazy sunday, I agree, its hard to do worse.

That being said, the majority of French cinema is nothing like that. Just recently I watched Les aventures extraordinaires d'Adèle Blanc-Sec. That film is like The Mummy or Night At The Museum. Its a lot of fun.. it just happens to be in French.

The majority of the French films I listed actually are more like what you are used to seeing in a theater, the exception probably being Belle de Jour.

Monsieur Ibrahim is a coming of age story.
Le premier jour du reste de ta vie is a family drama. The subject matter covered here are universal. I can't think of anyone who wouldn't like this film.
Je vais bien, ne t'en fais pas stars Melanie Laurent (Shoshana in Inglourious Basterds) as a girl struggling to deal with the disappearance of her twin brother.
in Jean de Florette and Manon Des Sources a farmer tries to drive away his new neighbor so he can take over the property he inherited.
La Haine is about French gang members in the early/mid 90s. Shows three friends struggling with poverty, drugs, violence, etc..

There are definitely some shitty French films but all of these are fantastic.
