Russula xerampelina? R. rosacea? Both or neither?
    #14457386 - 05/15/11 04:38 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I found these in a mossy area under two very large oak trees (at least I think they were oak).  At first I believed they might be shrimp russula, but closer inspection makes me think otherwise.  When I was trying to find the "fishy" smell, I instead detected a mushroomy smell, and a chemically acrid smell.

My best guess is that these might be R. rosacea.

About 50 feet down the hill from where I found the above mushrooms, I found these:

I feel more confident that these are R. xerampelina.

No spore print on either.  I live in southeastern US.  Any help on what I might have found?

All I can say is that I agree with the genus, which, I'm sure is kind of obvious and you already know. Other than that, all I can tell you is that I know there are a lot of red Russula species and I'm unable to provide a guess as to which you've found. Sorry I can help no further.

Does the rosy stem and fishy smell from #2 not narrow it down any?

I just chewed on a tiny bit, there was really no taste.  No acridness at all.
