Follow your dream!
    #14452257 - 05/14/11 04:39 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

"Well, my dream is to sleep until noon, get stoned and listen to music, party and surf."

"No, not that one. The one about school, marriage, kids and climbing the corporate ladder and accumulating expensive toys."

"Oh..."

By going to collage, getting an office job, getting married, having a family, then dying peacefully in your sleep. And if that's not what makes you happy, then you better pretend it does.

Why should someone pretend? Who should someone pretend for?

What you mentioned are 4 things that could make somebody happy/sad. There's a lot more in life that can make somebody happy/sad than that. Until life is "perfect" for every individual nobody has to be happy IMO. I would rather see everyone happy, but life is a bitch. I don't think anyone is choosing depression. Its how it is and has been. Were not perfect. That's why we are still trying to discover new drugs or forms of therapy. I do agree that if the four things you mentioned are done you are better off than a lot of individuals. It's sad to see myself sometimes pissed off at my life while ignoring the fact that I have been given opportunities some are unfortunately unable to get. I am better off than a lot of people materially. Psychologically, I have seen people with less than me much happier. The world has a lot of problem (poverty, starvation, murder etc...) and I still sometimes think my life is bad. It's hard to control depression though. It's not as easy as just saying "abrakadabra" and waiting for results. Spirituality does help though :sunny:.

Oh. Didn't catch that part . All I'm saying is that happiness sometimes isn't easy to achieve. It's easier for certain people though. That's why we have the biopsychosocial approach for determining the cause. One or all of those three factors could be causing the person to be unhappy. Some causes can be harder to fix than others. Medicine and therapy has improved a lot since psychology appeared. Individuals that deserve being called "spiritual" are also doing their part and have been for thousands of years. Lao Tsu would be a good example IMO.

How does one determine who deserves to be called "spiritual"? What does their "part" consist of? :ghandi:

True. I will rephrase that . I was making a bold statement. The reasoning sucked. It only applies to me and whoever agrees with me.

Individuals I THINK deserve being called "spiritual" are also doing their part and have been for thousands of years.

I guess I was hoping people would agree that certain "spiritual people" help us realize our insignificance or give us some form of catharsis that can last longer than the read. it might be better to call them artist or scientist that have written texts that "carry" benefits from reading it. You make a good point. If something benefits me or a bunch of other people too, it still doesn't mean it will affect people who haven't read it yet. For example, reading Lao Tsu helped me when I was in a shitty mind state. To be scientific, it might have been something else that happened in the meantime that did that. I just personally believe that his text helped me reprogram my mind to be more happy. It helped me realize my insignificance. I do stray from these beliefs and that usually only causes suffering for me. The ego can be a bastard if it's unsatisfied . Hope this clarifies what I meant. When it comes to spirituality I can never seem to explain what it means to me and have others correctly interpret me. I don't think I fully know what it means to me. I have an urge to read it and get psychological benefits I cannot explain well to others from it. I have read about people getting the same effect. The fact that it helped my mood should make sense to you. You're a follower of the death anxiety theory, if I correctly remember one of your posts.

Or eventually be lonely, hated, cut off from opportunity and surrounded by people who are equally interested in hurting others?

Oh yeah, THAT'S what culture is for

I meant the way in which culture can be seen as the cumulative attempt of humans to pass on collective knowledge of patterns, symbols, ways of living, attitudes, values, goals, and practices in order to continue to survive and thrive. Enforced culture (laws, collective attitudes towards things that are "taboo") are preserved because they serve a purpose...sadly, cultures get hijacked by interests that AREN'T beneficial to the individual, so you get rituals like "marriage, kids and climbing the corporate ladder and accumulating expensive toys" embedded in your psyche by cultural consciousness. Having a good work ethic is a helpful thing to get out of that at least, if you just ignore all the excess in there

I think you're mixing culture with society in your post. I agree with what your saying though. I think that does happen in societies and cultures worldwide, but i don't know if that's the reason humans created them.
