    #1445650 - 04/10/03 04:44 AM (13 years, 7 months ago)

what would be the best new-b way for good air exchange, tempature, and humidity for my 50 gallon rubermaid. i have a timer and digital thermometer, but i havent decided on humidification tequnicues. i was also thinking about drilling some holes near the botom depending on my setup for exit of co2. it will house probly 4 casings(will get the dimentions tommorow). anyways ide appritiate tips and poniters anyone has to offer, other than that ill just be reading up on eveyone else. thanks

WELL U can use a humidifier if you want. also use some polyfil to cover those holes you make and you can also use a aquarium pump for new air in there..

50 gallon.. i wouldnt use a pump. You wont need to fan as much with that size of terrarium fortunately, so manual fanning would probably be your best bet. As for humidification.. get ur self a spray bottle. If you dont want to spray all the time use some perlite to keep humidity up.. i know its messy but it works. For something more automated.. use a cool mist and use the esxcape holes at the bottom. You can use a USH, but will need to regulate it more with a timer and still find a way to provide air exchange.

There are lots of options, just depends on what your needs are and what fits in your budget. If your able to give it more attention, I'd say the manual way is the most efficient in price terms.

absolutely.

that would work, coupled with some perlite.

the only problem is that most computer
fans run off 12volts, the charge coming
out your wall is 120volts.

you can buy 120volt computer fans, but
they are about as much as a viks coolmist.

if you ever plan on expanding, you may
want to just go ahead and buy the coolmist
and a nice digital timer that allows many
settings and at very granular (1 minute)
increments.

you could run the thing 14 times a day, 1
or 2 minutes at a stretch and have more
than enough air exchange, plus, when
using a humidifier for air exchange, you
get the added bonus of humidity!

a plain fan will knock down the rH every
time you run it, with the viks, it'll drop,
but only slightly and should rebound
quicker.

plus, if you get another bin or try to
rig up a shelf system in the future, the
viks will scale nicely.

so in basic, a good humidifier will also do air exchange, with just some pollyfill holes drilled in the botom of my terranium for exit of CO2. now, anyone have any good recomendations for brands of humidifiers. i kinda wana do ultrasonic on a timer but i heard folks say that the physical part of the ultrasonic dies quickly for what we do. and then i read somewhere if i get an ultrasonic from wallmart that they got humidifier warrentys, err the humidifiers them selfs have warrentys so when they bust they can be imiditly exchanged. anyways thanks afof, rob and dream for steping up and offering this new-b good advice. check back later guys.

The above setup will work fine for casings as well, at least that's what I was told.

For humidity if casing perlite may add too much moisture, simple misting could work, or a fine-mist humdifier on low with auto shut off (or with the timer). If using cakes though perlite is a great choice.

Air exchange: my recently departed school teacher didnt like fanning cause it always felt just like "airing" in contams, so he neva really tried it, a STRONG air pump could work. Or a filtered lid (altho this could also dry out casing rather quickly)

Temp: Normal room temp (~75F) should suffice.

Best bet is to read around and see wat can suit best for ur allocated resources. HOpe this helps.

yup thanks for the reply, i am now on the subject of air exchange for a 50 gallon rubbermaid. i think im going to drill holes near the bottom and put in some plug in PC fans from radioshack or somthing. has anyone heard of automated air exchange excluding an ultrasonic itself

Better to fan than let it be stagnant. Contams love stagnant air.
