well then you have no clue about film making. just because a film is old doesn't mean it's cheesy, or doesn't allude to much bigger things than you see on the screen.
if you haven't seen it I suggest you watch it...it's an awesome film

Funny that you say that. The Cube and The Cube 2 contained so much mystery for me. About 8 years ago they just appeared on my computer and no one with access to it said they put them there. And I was on Dial-up at the time so downloading it was not really an option, I mean i don't think i could have been away that long or tie up the only phone for that long.
Kind of an interesting movie but I didn't like it, and 2 was even worse.

I just say effects-wise. There's still the potential for character development, plot, mystery, etc. but there's no getting around the fact that special effects are just better today, which help make the supernatural more convincing. You could have the best acting and other elements of a movie, but then a claymation monster or some guy in terrible makeup pops into the seen, and I roll my eyes.

Ok I can agree w/ you somewhat, but Night of the Living Dead is about the conflict that occurs between the people stuck inside the house. It's awesome.
Also you need to use your imagination more. Just because it doesn't look real doesn't change the story...
example: Jason and the Argonauts. full of horrible special effects but still one of my favorite movies

I need to use my imagination more? That's what books are for. But I'll check out the original night of the living dead, just to see if you're right.

if you let the quality of special effects determine whether or not a movie is good...then I don't even know what to say except

I never seen the first one so I don't know how that differs from the one I have seen (I don't remember if it was Cube 2 or Cube 0)
but it's kind of a saw (the first one) type thriller without the gore and more of a sci fi plot
you wake up trapped in an unfamiliar place with people you don't know for reasons you can't understand can you get out?
it's the only REAL horror imo. it's not likely that some ax wielding psyco killer will ever come after you but it is a real possibility to be lost and scared in a place you are unfamiliar with

On second thought, I don't like your attitude. I won't check out the original. I'll get the remake!! Don't you know special effects are

Don't know how I forgot to suggest Suspira.
Turn the light off and the volume up for that one.. the score in meant to be really jarring.
Its an older movie but there aren't really any special effects so your argument is moot (although its a pretty lame argument to begin with).

Well dude, let me just say that you'll be missing out on a great film..
I checked Antichrist last night via netflix and I don't really know what to think except that it's not everyday you get to see Charlotte Gainsbourg cut her clitoris off using scissors...
It definitely fits in the category you're looking after OP. It's dark, it's weird, it's full of '' WTF '' and it's filled with mysterious shit.
Check it out!

the thing your missing is all horror movies made in the last ten years are terrible or just mediocre.
there maybe but only like 3 really good ones that i can recall. House of 1000 corpses and 28 days later and Pan's labyrinth.
this is my opinion of course but these movies are the only ones that actually had a deeper artistic side to them.

agreed.
Some others..
Orphan was good. The Children was ok. The Host was awesome but if you can't handle old movies I have no idea your opinion on subtitles. House of the Devil was great but you don't seem to be the kind of person who appreciates a slow burn in your horror movies.. you want something to jump right out at you from the beginning right?
