Horror Movies With a Bit of Mystery
    #14450100 - 05/14/11 08:53 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I would like to hear what your recommendations are, and what you like. However, it seems most horror movie threads on shroomery are full of old school films. Not saying all old movies suck, but they're just not my taste.

I also don't care for slasher films, except for the saw series. Don't bother mentioning zombie films either...there's just too many of them.

I liked Dreamcatcher and The Mist based on Stephen King books. Sixth Sense, Poltergeist, The Others...basically horror films that are mysteries as well, and I like twists.

I think you are looking for a "Thriller"
such as a "Mystery Thriller" or "Psychological Thriller"

I watch a ton of horror movie so I'll try to come up with some titles
but I though I might make your search a little easier with a narrower genre

Yeah, I suppose that's the proper title of the genre, but what's the difference? What defines a horror movie vs. a thriller?

Not a movie, but I am playing Dead Space for the first time right now since I got it on sale last week, and it is scaring the shit out of me

From what I've heard the story is supposed to be a really good, and so far it is.

I watched the anime movie for it too last night which wasn't bad.

Thriller is a genre of literature, film, video gaming and television that uses suspense, tension, and excitement as the main elements. The primary subgenre is psychological thrillers. After the assassination of President Kennedy, political thriller and paranoid thriller films became very popular. The brightest examples of thrillers are the films of Alfred Hitchcock.

Horror films are unsettling movies that strive to elicit the emotions of fear, disgust and horror from viewers. They often feature scenes that startle the viewer through the means of macabre and the supernatural, thus frequently overlapping with the fantasy and science fiction genres. Horrors also frequently overlap with the thriller genre.

generally I think Thrillers are more plot and character driven focusing on the mental
whereas Horror focus' on the physical
basically the difference between witnessing a murder and being involved in one

So you want a horror movie with mystery but no slasher films, no zombies, and it has to be recent..

You're not exactly making this easy.

Pontypool is really good. It is a zombie movie but you never really see the zombies at all. Its a more psychological horror.

I guess Hard Candy could be considered a horror depending on how you look at it. It is definitely VERY suspenseful and you're never quite sure what the truth is.. HIGHLY recommend that one.

I think Cloverfield is pretty underrated.

Dead Snow is really good but it has a bunch of comedy in it too.. I think that is the perfect mix of comedy and genuinely good horror.

Let The Right One In is amazing if you haven't seen it yet. The Swedish version.. not the bastardized American remake..

I really like Lifeforce too. Its not really recent.. was made in 1985 but you mentioned Poltergeist which is older than that so whatever.

And I'll say check out Moon too..

Most horror films are either stupid or simply not scary...

Stupid: Look at the Scream movies

Not scary: Look at the Saw movies

To me a great horror movie needs a little bit of the following

- A plot (logic right)
- Something paranormal (helps explain the parts that wouldn't make sense if analyzed)
- Gore
- A twist ending
- Moment that makes you jump out of your seat
- No comedy whatsoever, otherwise it makes it cheesy

Good exaples would be The Ring and The Grudge.

Mix in creepy kids and you got a winning formula.

I'll recomend

the Ring
Rachel Keller is a journalist investigating a videotape that may have killed four teenagers (including her niece). There is an urban legend about this tape: the viewer will die seven days after watching it. If the legend is correct, Rachel will have to run against time to save her son's and her own life.

if you like the 6th sense you might like
DeVil
In Philadelphia, Detective Bowden is still grieving for his wife and son, killed in a hit-and-run five years ago. A suicidal person jumps off from the top of a skyscraper onto a truck, and Bowden is sent to investigate. Meanwhile five strangers are trapped in an elevator in the building where the jumper committed suicide. The communication radio in the elevator is broken but the guards, Lustig and Ramirez, observe the individuals via CCTV as events unfold. Having been trapped for some time, tensions are high, so Lustig calls the police and Detective Bowden assumes the case. Without being able to contact the individuals he tries to work out who they are and realizes he can only account for four of them. Time is running out for the occupants of the elevator as Bowden realizes he has to get them out quickly.

the Cube (I've only seen one of the sequals)
Six different people, each from a very different walk of life, awaken to find themselves inside a giant cube with thousands of possible rooms. Each has a skill that becomes clear when they must band together to get out: a cop, a math whiz, a building designer, a doctor, an escape master, and a disabled man. Each plays a part in their thrilling quest to find answers as to why they've been imprisoned.

I'll think of more

Space is always a good setting for these types of movies.

I recommend checking out Pandorum. Wasn't great, but it is worth the watch imo.

I just watched The Cube. How can that be classified as "horror"? Pretty interesting, but the ending didn't live up to my expectations.
