???
    #14455756 - 05/15/11 11:30 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Im interested in growing edibles just so i dont have to worry about space and hiding the grow site.

Are any edibles like growin cubes?
Cubes seem easy enough but im not to fond of getting in trouble. Yet.

I have a Basic set-up

-6 Qt. Mason Jars.
-syth. Filter Discs. Injector Port -  Autoclavable
-P.Canner 15psi (6Qt...Only can fit 3 Fucking Walmart rip off)
-Mini Mono tub

Substrate- ???
Can I use Coir? Coffee? And Verm?

I know many edibles grow on Wood. Any way I can fit that into a Mono Tub.

I was thinking Shiitake. Or Oyster?
What would be A good start?
thanks.

In RR's "Lets grow mushrooms" vids they are growing oysters on BRF cakes so I'd imagine that the oysters are at least pretty tolerant to different substrates.

Oysters are easy, shiitake are not too hard either. Get a liquid culturefrom one of our sponsors:yesnod: and make sterilized grains since you have the jars. Grain jars can be used to inoculate bulk subs like supplemented sawdust or wood dowel pins to use on logs.

But to answer you question directly. Edibles are sort of like cubes until you get past the grain stage, then the worlds separate. Edibles are more demanding than the ever forgiving cube.

Most species will thrive on rye. Oysters can be grown on a variety of cheap materials such as coffee grounds and newspapers.

Yes, let them soak over night in a bucket. The next day, rinse them off in a colander. Put them in a big pot and fill it with water so the water level is over the grain and biol to the point that the grain is going to burst, but don't let it. You will see this by the transparency of the grain. It will have a sort of see through look to it. Once done, go to sink and turn on the COLD WATER so your pipes don't bust. drain the grain through the colander to get all the hot water out of the pot. let grain air cool, mix every so often. This lets the steam escape and I find gets the water ratio just right for me when I PC. The outside of the grain will look a bit dry but the inside will be moist. Load your jars up, lid and foil the top. Then PC at 15 lbs for 60 min.

Wood pellet fuel works, most saw mills give it to you free though.

NO...if you want to use manure then shiitake and oyster are the wrong ones for you. They need wood products to fruit. Also a mono tub will not get you real far.

Oysters are in fact wood lovers, saw dust is thus the preferable substrate - or any other substrate consisting mainly of cellulose (like straw). Moreover they need way more FAE than Cubes do - using a monotub might thus not be the best idea.
