hi there - my girls found these under a pine tree in our back yard and after a bit of googling I was wondering whether they were gold tops - any help is much appreciated.

The mushrooms in your gallery are ps. subaeruginosa.
I was under the impression that 'gold tops' referred to ps. cubensis, but maybe I'm mistaken, or in Australia (which I take it you're from) you use a different nomenclature. Anyway, I prefer using Latin names, as it is less confusing.

Use of common names in Australia are all over the place, people just seem to call any active whatever name they happen to know. It gets quite confusing and a little frustrating.

Great. So basically every active mushroom can bee a "golden top". I think I just have to accept that some people have no interest in mycology other than to get high. I shall be referring to every mushroom that causes gastrointestinal upsets as "stool boosters" from now on. "Dude, are these 'stool boosters'?"
