Simple, alternate substrate recipes?
    #1444974 - 04/09/03 10:42 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

Anyone know a simple recipe that does not include vermiculite?

Millet spawned to poo or straw.

Just something I can stick in a jar and sterilize with steam, then innoculate with a syringe. Really simple stuff.

Poop jars! ...but you'd want to pasteurize it. (do a search)

Thanks Closetcase,

Pasteurization doesn't seem very difficult at all according to this  Shroomery FAQ article.

So you reckon all I have to do is stick a jar of moist shit in the microwave, then innoculate it with a spore syringe and I'm good to go? Why the hell does anyone bother with anything else? Because shit stinks?

Which brings me to another point. If pasteurization is so simple, why don't people do that instead of sterilizing stuff in steamers and pressure cookers?

Good question...I'd like to hear some answers to that because I'm curious as well.

easier access to BRF in health stores in the city, than access to cow shit in the barbed-wire fenced off properties in the country?

Yeah, I'm still waiting on an answer to that to. I've got a little speil on nazi-like sterility measures below, but I hope it doesn't side-track the thread, I still want to hear about pasteurization!

As a side note, I find much of the sterilization procedures to be pretty hyped up in the FAQs and stuff. Mine are very relaxed compared to what it recommended. I just use common sense.

I've never needed a pressure cooker, I just steam my jars for an hour or so.

I have never bothered with anti-bacterial sprays or soaps, either - and flameing metal utensils until they're red-hot is a ludicrous measure.

I don't even sterilize my casing layers, and have never had a severe problem.

I just wash my immediate environment, wash my hands, and try not to breathe on shit. I use the microwave to sterilize shot glasses, spoons and other little things like that, and a quick lick of fire for needles.

I get about a 1 in 20 contamination ratio during incubation, if I use a sterile print.

With the PF TEK most of the sterilizing is done with limited exposure to contaminans I also have a low rate.A lot of the sterlizing is unnessary ,but the reason for all the hype is so the beginner will be successful the first time.If you ever tried the agar and isolation method sterlizing becomes a big factor.
YEA, im looking for an alternative to vermiculite cause its getting harder to find here.I think with my next startup im using the malt liquid method.

perlite, or cat litter can be used instead of vermiculite, but results are not as good .
straight manure in a jar is even more iffy . you would need to add verm, or straw, or you end up with a jar full of sludge .
also, spores are hard to germinate on manure, that's why it is inoculated with grain .

You can get away with only pasteurizing poo because it has a number of beneficial microbes that keep that bad contams in check while the mycelium does it's thing. Vatoloco put it best:

"with a pasteurized substrate, you have a contingent
of beneficial microbes and even some bacteria
all vying for a piece of the action.

while they're all battling for supremacy, each
keeping the other in check, the mycellium shows
up on the scene and macks them all."

Sterilizing poo will kill off these beneficial microbes and often leads to failure (contamination).

BRF is a different story. It must be sterilized. Same thing with grains (too many nasties in there to only pasteurize, it must be sterilized in a PC).
