Can't gain weight!
    #14453618 - 05/14/11 09:27 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Alright everyone, so I've been drinking

at night as a form of casein protein, and taking about two to three of these a day (one scoop per drink) and always after lifting.

I eat around six small meals a day. This can usually consist of raisin bran with whole milk, a protein shake with a granola bar, whole wheat pasta with meat sauce, and greek yogurts in between.

AND I STILL CAN'T GAIN WEIGHT

I've been working out and I definitely have muscle on my body, maybe all my fat got converted to muscle so I weight about the same? I don't know anymore. I've been stuck around 132 for a month or two and I've been on this diet for easily a month.

Is there any hope for me shroomery?

What I mean is I'll have three average meals (eggs with cheese), (pasta with meat sauce), and raisen bran with whole milk. Then I'll have two whey protein shakes in between that, two to three greek yogurts, and a syntha six shake before I go to sleep.

It's pretty much all I can fit in my stomach without shotgun barreling it out.

your metabolizing all the food quickly because your body knows more food is coming if you semi starve yourself and eat like 2 big meals a day your body will think your starving and it produces more fat for reserves

Are you sure about that?  I thought you were supposed to do what RP is doing and eat 4-6 meals all throughout the day...

If you absolutely feel the need to drink protein shakes then just pick one. You dont need to spend cash on fancy drinks to gain weight.

Dood, raisin bran aint gonna do shit for an athlete. An athletic breakfast, in my opinion and personal experience, is massive. I am sorry but cereal will most likely not cut it for an athlete or someone like you and me. We are hardgainers, skinny guys, or as somatotypes go "ectomorphs". We burn out food easily into energy and typically have a hard time gaining muscle or fat. We have very fast metabolisms. But there is hope!

I used to weigh 135 and a height of 6'2. Now I weight 195 at the same height. My goal is 220 by the end of the summer.

Food is definitely important but unless your executing the essential lifts, you wont gain as much mass. You absolutely need to learn how to properly preform squats and deadlifts. squats and deadlifts will do wonders for gaining weight.

If you want to get bigger you have to lift heavy weights and eat like a champion. You want to lift heavy weights for an hour or less. You will do exercises such as deadlifts, squats, bench press, dips, standing millitary press, barbell pushpress, pullups, bent over rows, clean and jerks(if you have form). Those are the essentials.

You need to find an actually building plan. Building muscle is a slow process. My program is I think around 56 weeks long. During certain phases I dont gain weight but I get leaner and during other phases, like the one I am in now, I gain 15 pounds in 2 weeks. I HIGHLY recommend Lou Schuler and Alwyn Cosgroves The New Rules of Lifting for Men. It has a skinny man program which I have done and it works. But it only works if you perfect your form and diet.

Diet. My friend, as a hardgainer, diet will be the hard part and lifting will be the easy part. I had to make a commitment for myself. Either nothing or all in. I chose all in and in consequence I essentially base my life around meals. 6-7 fulls meals a day.

Dont be intimidated. You cant start out eating 6 full meals a day because your body simply wont allow you to eat that much. But I guarantee when you start squating (for me 260 pounds), you will want to eat everything in site all day long.

Let me tell you what I eat. I dont claim to be the healthiest mother fucker on the planet but I make my goals in the weight room and I get bigger and stronger. Of course I get fatter too, but that comes with strength training. If you ever get too fat and you want to lose it, then simply do a fat loss program.

breakfast; 2 servings old fashioned oatmeal(pretty much one entire pot), 1 cup raisins, 1 spoon peanut butter, 1 multivitamin

breakfast2; 2 sandwiches made with lunch meats or sometimes fastfood

lunch; chicken breast, dark greens, baked potato, cheese, and supplement flaxseed oil

dinner; cut of beef, vegetable, buttered noodles

dinner2; porkchop, rice, cheese, supplement flaxseed oil

meal 6; 1/2 gallon of 2% milk

meal 7; Shake: 1 scoop protein, 1 raw egg, 1 glass of water, 1 slim fast shake, and melted peanut butter mixed up together.

This is my ideal diet. Its so fucking hard to keep up with it and some days life happens and I just cant eat all that. As long as you keep trying you will gain weight. But you have to realize if you want to gain some weight you are going to have to EAT.

I will tell you a little secret that worked for me. I am not recommending it but I will say it worked wonders for me. When I first started strength training I drank a gallon of whole milk a day for a month and went from 160 to 180 body weight. I gained a major gut from bloat, but I also got alot stronger and bigger. Eventually when I stopped the gallon of milk a day I lost my gut and kept my weight. It worked.

Eat quality meals with freshly cut meat, carbohydrates and fat. IF you have to eat some cheeseburgers to get in that 6th meal then do it. That is if risking your internal health is worth getting bigger to you.

And dont forget....

Drink ya milk!! at least 1/2 gallon a day plus 5 full meals will be a good start for you.

P.S. Those guys who are telling you to essentially trick your body by slowing down your metabolism and eatling 3 big meals a day is, in my oppinion, not a good idea for an athlete or lifter. Be true to your body. Listen to your body. If you strength train 4 times a week and your body is telling you FEEEEED MEEEE then dont skimp out and and 3 meals a day. EAT AS MUCH AS YOU WANT!!! Nourish your body, repair those muscles and bones. EAT EAT EAT.

Listen to XUL.
- Diet : Eat shit tons of complex carbohydrates (spaghetti, bread, oatmeal, etc), get your EFAs (essential fatty acids) from a handful of nuts per meal and eat eggs, cottage cheese or tuna for easy protein.

I'm planning on bulking again. I'm extremely tall and skinny and it feels like I gotta give it my all in the eating department :P

I'm taking in just over 3000 calories in 4 meals right now which isn't easy since Im not use to eating that much anymore.

Each meal consists primarily of my complex carbs (generally 70g+ worth), a giant handful of almonds of shelled sunflower seeds and either eggs, cottage cheese or yogurt w/ whey protein.

Aside from making sure that I sleep for a good 10-12 hours each night right now all I gotta do is lift real heavy and make sure I dont miss my meals.

Also, like XUL said, Deadlifts, Squats (giant movements).. bench press too.

I do have fruits and veggies, not as many each day as I should be, but this is just a general outline of where pretty much all my calories come from.

1. Eat like a champ
2. Sleep like a hibernating bear
3. Lift heavy for a few minutes  (literally... I should post an ongoing video of myself and show just how little lifting is involved in gaining muscle mass compared to eating and sleeping)

Consistency is what will get you there dude. Good luck! This will be my second time doing this. It takes real dedication, but well worth the effort.

Offtopic, but i would like to hear some others comments on;

Quote:

2. Sleep like a hibernating bear

I was following a pretty freestyle routine over the winter, mostly focused around high volume deadlifts (5x5 +) and KB.

Anyways, i was always tired, and it's become a point of contention between my live in girlfriend and I.

It's difficult to choose, naps after work and a nagging girlfriend, or doing whatever it takes.

I've actually scaled back my routine ALOT, but am thinking about getting back into it, to the girlfriends chagrin.

Has having a regular Body building program disrupted your life by making your tired all the time? Any thoughts on this?

132 lbs? put some meat on them bones boy!

Do yourself a favor. Count the calories you eat each day for a week. Basically list times and everything you eat. Then look at the results and change what you think needs to change, such as a higher calorie intake.

Besides that both XUL and Zootroid know know exactly what they are talking about. Thats all truth. I dont eat like XUL. . that fucker has a strict ass diet. Shit i forget to eat half the time and drink way too much alcohol all the time. Id prob be a swole mother fucker if i ate like him.

You should be lifting at least 3 days a week. If you get serious/complicated you can actually handle 4-5 days. but like the routines would be so difficult to come up with. just go 3 days man. Thats all it takes to hit everything. I do 3 days half the year and 4 days the other half. Literally switching every 3 months.

Learn how to do deadlifts, squat, bench.

You need strong legs to have a strong back and you need a strong back to have a strong bench.  The exercises you absolutely better have or have something similar are deadlifts, squats, bench press, military press. and in that order.

My deadlift alone has made everything else i do stronger by far. In fact on my deadlift day i go all out, and the other shit is jus secondary. Powerlifting is where its at man, specially for someone that doesnt need to lose weight.

Probably gonna puke soon, but am I on track?

I'll be workin hard on the deadlifts and squats. I'll probably eat some more greek yogurt until my next food slot. By the way, is it  a myth that you can only absorb 30 grams of protein at once?

Are you trying to gain muscle or fat? im confused if your trying to gain muscle eat more meals(your gonna need the nutrients) work out longer then you ever wanted to and think about your muscles while your work them to find new ones/ways to build strength it actually works.
If you want fat then eat more big meals stop working out and sleep a lot. You should gain some weight.

There is no exact number. Depends on types of proteins and the body. Ive heard numbers range from 28-35 grams. Dont even worry about that. Its unimportant. Just know that 50g protein in one meal, prob doesnt make a difference.

You need to eat calories man....increase the amount of meals you have a day!! But make good choices on your foods ones with high protein, carbs, little fat. You should eat double the amount of grams of protein for your weight at least.

Some good advice here.  If you arn't gaining weight you arn't eating enough simple as that.

Before I started working out I was 6' about 150lb couldnt bench press 135 if my life depended on it , the first year after I took it seriously I got to 185lb, yeah it wasnt ALL muscle but it was serious weight fast and helped give me a much bigger frame all around.

want to know the secret? Fast food calories on top of regular calories, whole milk, weight gainer (premade or make your own w/ regular protein powder,oats/peanut butter.  I prefer premade though) on top of working out like there is no tomorrow.  This was before I knew about diet but it worked great for me, and maybe can work for you too, as an ectromorph.  I was eating 3 McDonlads double cheeseburgers a day for lunch at least, sure not the healthiest but if you are young (I was 18) and working out VERY hard you won't get too fat, it will increase your strength and size fast.

Now at 22 I know about diet and training more so and am in the 200's naturally which is a great achievement for me, like XUL Im gonna get to 220 before cutting down again.

First thing when you wake up PROTEIN SHAKE, this gets your body ready for a meal which you will want to eat 1-2hrs later.  Sleep is the most catabolic time for our bodies so you want that initial protein shot in the morning, its also good you are taking casein at night, not many people seem to realize the benefits of slow digesting casein protein, i'm glad you do - keep doing that.

For breakfast 1-2hrs after your morning shake you should try to eat 4-8eggs(1yolk the rest whites) 2-4 wheat toast, 2 slices bacon (turkey best, but pork works) tall glass water, multi vitamin.

Every 2-3 hours afterwards you will need to eat something like: 15oz of steak, chicken, tuna, turkey and 1 cup(2 cups if a post workout meal) of white or brown rice.  A straight Protein + carb meal is the best for mass.  You can subsitute 15oz meat portions for other things to, this is just a general idea.

Workout 3-5 days a week this is a whole thread in itself.. but as a beginner working out you will make fantastic gains pretty much no matter what you do.  The most gains you recieve while working out are within the first year.  But for your sake i'll spare you all the time I wasted trying to get big.  Get right into bench press, deadlifts, squats, shoulder presses- and hit your arms hard, dont really worry about abs.

You can substitue protein shake or weight gainer for a meal if you really cannot stomach any food, as long as you are getting a constant stream of nutrients in your body every 2-3 hrs you'll be good for the most part.  Don't be afraid of fast food, ice cream, and other high caoloric 'bad' foods. Once in a while either this will add on calories quick and help you in your position since your so skinny I wouldn't even worry about gaining fat.  Pop Tarts are a great bulking snack for skinny dudes, 2 tarts is 400 calories right there and they are sweet and easy to eat very caloric dense.  Just dont eat a shitload of them at night/before bed, that much sugar at night isnt that great for you.

You'll gain weight in no time.

Eat two peanut butter sandwiches and A shake if you can right before you go to sleep (I mean like 15 min before) Drink your protein shakes and eat enough breakfast for 2 people (making good food choices of course) Do this right after you wake up.

DRINKIG YOUR CALORIES DOESNT COUNT AS A MEAL. So you dont have to starve yourself during the day and you can do a light snack but stear clear of heavy stuff. Sometimes drinking your calories is helpful when your having a hard time stuffing yourself.

Don't eat dinner until at most 4 hrs before bed time. Eat double portions of carbs, proteins, and good fats. Slim down in your veggie intake and focus on very sweet and carb filled fruits like apples! this is how athletes in college gain weight healthily and the same goes for wasting sickness patients etc. Eating several meals  throughout the day tells your metabolism and your body to burn those calories because those calories keep coming if you graze.

Now if you only eat twice a day your body holds on to every available nutrient introduced into the body because your body knows it won't be eating for a while. This reserving is the body's natural response to self preserve.

In order for your eating habits to actually effect your body's habits takes some time though. About 3 weeks. About 25 days. The same amount of time for you to gain the routine of eating like this naturally. Your brain and body work in patterns and you can't really change that...
Also the average person lives an average activity lifestyle, not too much exercise, but not terribly out of shape. This person needs to consume 2,500 calories if he is male or 2,00-200 if female. To gain weight being average one would need to eat about an extra 500-1000 cal to notice change. If your metabolism is fast add more if its slow and weight gain is easy add less.

All my information is derived from personal experience, many read books and http://nutritiondata.self.com/ a USDA approved site for advanced, in depth nutritional information and guidance tools.

Hope this helps...
