Honeck and Grimaud at the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra
    #14453712 - 05/14/11 09:42 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

My girl bought us a dinner at a beatifull italian restaurant and then I suprised her with tickets to the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

It was marvelous. The main attractors were Manfred Honeck, conductor and Hélène Grimaud, piano.

The pieces were

Joan Tower: Stroke World-Premiere, PSO Commission
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 23, K. 488
Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Opus 36

I thought it was pretty amazing that Grimaud was not reading from a sheet of music on her piano. She simply had memorized Mozarts Piano Concerto No. 23. She also was interesting to watch. She really got into the music as she was swaying all around and seemingly flowing with the rythyms.

To be honest I LOVED Joan Towers Stroke World-Premiere. It was seemingly malevolent and absolutely amazing. When I heard this piece my heart rate was sky high as the music was so intense. The music was alive with thrill, life, and sheer malice so it seemed to me. I LOVED IT.

I cant wait to go back!

To be honest though, I am more interested in todays creations rather than classical works.
