Iran warns West it could allow transit of drugs
May 14, 2011 - dailytimes.pk

Iran threatened Saturday to allow the transit of illegal drugs through its territory to Europe if the West continues to criticize the Islamic nation for its practice of executing drug traffickers.

Mohammad Javad Larijani, the head of Iran’s High Council for Human Rights, said Iran was sacrificing blood in fighting drug trafficking and suggested it is unfair that it is then condemned by the West for executing smugglers. “Westerners have to either be Iran’s partner in the fight against drug traffickers or we must think otherwise and, for instance, allow the transit” of drugs across Iranian territory, Larijani said in a comment posted on the judiciary’s website Saturday. He said such a move would reduce the number of overall executions in Iran by 74 percent, “but the way will be paved for the smuggling of narcotics to Europe.”

UN officials have in the past warned that a ‘heroin tsunami’ could hit Europe if the drug interdiction by Iran is weakened. Iran says it has lost more than 3,700 troops in the fight against drug traffickers and 11,000 more have been injured to date since 1979, when the Islamic Revolution brought hard-line clerics to power. “Unfortunately, Western countries not only provide no assistance to Iran in the fight against drug trafficking, they condemn us every year for punishing drug smugglers,” Larijani said.

Iran has also called on Europe to offer financial support to its fight against trafficking. Iran lies along a major drug route between Afghanistan — which accounts for more than 90 percent of the world’s illicit opium and heroin production — and Europe.

Iranian authorities have taken several steps to stop trafficking, including the building of dikes and trenches along large portions of its roughly 560-mile border with Afghanistan. Officials also seize more than three tons of narcotics each day, according to official statistics. Meanwhile, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Saturday dismissed three ministers whose portfolios are being merged with other ministries as part of a cabinet streamlining, his office’s website announced. Those who lose their jobs include Oil Ninister Masoud Mirkazemi whose responsibilities are being merged with the energy ministry. Iran is OPEC’s second largest crude exporter and currently holds the cartel’s presidency. Welfare Minister Sadeq Mahsouli and Industries Minister Ali Akbar Mehrabian also go, as their responsiblities are merged with the labour and commerce ministries respectively. The departures are part of a streamlining of the cabinet provided for under Iran’s development plan for 2010-2015, which requires the number of posts to be cut from 21 to 17. Transport minister Hamid Behbahani already lost his job in February when he failed to survive an impeachment motion in parliament. His responsibilities have been merged with the housing ministry. The mechanics of the downsizing have been a source of tension for weeks between the president and parliament.

Ahmadinejad says that cabinet appointments are his prerogative but parliament insists it must approve the new portfolios and who holds them. A widely reported war of words erupted this week between Ahmadinejad and parliament speaker Ali Larijani on the issue, before Iran’s powerful Guardians Council intervened and sided with parliament on Thursday. The Guardians Council, is the body that oversees elections, interprets the constitution and vets parliamentary legislation.

Pretty sure the world's governments need to figure out that the world's people want to do drugs.

Seriously. Just give it up and start producing and taxing the drugs.

Jesus; 3/4 of the people they execute over there are drug smugglers?

I bet a lot of those folks are heavily packing (such as AK-47s and RPGs) and travel in groups large to dissuade the military from trying to murder them but small enough to not be easily seen/identified.

Of course the US would condemn the execution of drug smugglers.  The prison industry cannot pull any profit from a dead body.

Funny how since the Taliban fell out of power in Afghanistan the amount of Heroin exported has multiplied. Karzai's family is part of this drug cartel and the NATO and US allies in the region are forced to go along with this because poppies account for 3 billion+ in annual revenue. Meanwhile overdoses in N. America are on the rise. The average age of heroin users has dropped to the mid-teens and prices for the junk are plummeting as well. Restructuring efforts in Afghanistan such as improving irrigation is actually in the same region where all the poppies are grown. Do the math.

Another example of regime building gone wrong. Also goes to show that if 74% of their executions are for smuggling, that even the most draconian laws will not dissuade normal human behavior. In other words, give it up already!

Excellent point and I've argued this with prohibitionists many many times in the past.

Well, the CIA has to get their cut of the trafficking profits.  Iran is just pissed off because since the US got into Afghanistan, the CIA has been the major funnel for opium and heroin to all points west.  They are Butt-Hurt that they are not getting their share of the lucrative trade.
