Idea for modified monotub

always getting side pins no matter what I try... pure HP in monotub with 1:5 ratio of colonised rye. The conditions around the edges are just always gonna be better than on the surface...
Next time I'll try loading the substrate into plant pots or jars instead of in one block. then I'll have alot more area where the side pins will form. the jars will be loaded into the monotubs as usual.
any comments?

or I could cover the surface with cling film to imitate the sides? Ooops I forgot Ive already tried that! Still only had side pins! Well actually I used wax paper...

I was thinking of something similar. I was going to try flat, seni-circle, and cylinder shapes. I assume it would all depend on what kind of mushroom you decide to grow. Safeway throws away these really nice stackable, air-tight, 3 gallon buckets, so I was going to use those.

but the smaller your tubs are, the more you can fit in a fruiting chamber like a monotub...plus 10 small tubs have more circumference (side pinning area) than 5 larger ones...

Your trouble is that conditions aren't right for top pins. Learn to provide the conditions the mushrooms want and they will pin where you tell them to.

I misread your post. Sorry about that. I didn't sleep last night. I was planning on fruiting from the sides.

Don't use foil, this can lead to massive side pinning.
Produce correct conditions on top and that's where it will pin.

I use black plastic bin bags. the tubs are blue anyway so not much light would go through. Doc T, what could you advise me? Ive done lots of searching on the forums on the subject, and tried most of them

I wait till full colonisation of the HP, then a few days more. then take the tape off the holes and stuff them with polyfill, iontroduce light, leave at room temp( I colonise with a little heat from a heat mat ) et voila! Sometimes I unplug the polyfill to initiate pinning quicker but this can dry the sub out. should I wait longer after full colonisation before changing the environement?

I never did get a polyfil based monotub to work right. That's how I found the MSG design, trying different alternatives.

Someone told me this before too.. I think in one of your other posts in fact? No idea... The only reason I could think of is because of the foils shine. I would only think that would matter if the foil was wrapped on the outside of the tub to prevent the side pinning.

The foil is directly attached to the sub due to the myc, so that there is no evaporation possible at the sides. No evaporation no pinning. I never had pins at the side since i used the foil. I cant even imagine how the foil could cause massive side pinning. But i am a noob.......maybe someone can explain me how the foil could cause side pinning.
foil reflects light at the sides of your substrate.
there is much debate on this forum as to what the real cause of side pins are.
the conclusion ive reached doesnt say one or the other. its both.
doc_t proved in his MSG thread that (at least in some substrains of cubensis) light is indeed the factor that creates side pinning.
RR on the other hand insists that it is ONLY due to the microclimate created between the side of the tub and the substrate.
a few months back i used a white trash bag to do a MSG style tub, and i got TONS of side pins regardless of the trashbag being completely touching the side of the myc.
tldr; sometimes its the microclimate, (your tub doesnt have enough humidity at the top) and sometimes it really is just the light hitting your substrate.
