newbie crop with pics
    #14449670 - 05/14/11 05:14 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

hi,

just wanted to post some pics to see if anyone had feedback

grow kit... in the dark for 3 -4 weeks... then into the bag with the wet (soaked) vermaculite.  nothing happened for a good 2-3 weeks.  when looking at the bag for signs of life, I shock it once (out of frustration I think more than anything) and then bang, 2 days laters I saw the schrooms phad popped up!

I'm a little concerned by the slight discolouration - a little/light patch of slightly green stuff in the white cake.  then on top of the schroom where the slightly purple underneath of one schroom fell on top of another it went purple on the head.

Could they be contaminated? :frown:

The dark spots are just spores.

Yup, just spores and the cake discoloration is from dehydration after fruiting. harvest the big boys and let the others grow until the veils break.

Very nice job for your first cake :datass:

sweet...
thanks

dehydration sounds about right.  a mate asked if I'd misted every day.  I haven't touched it since puttin the cake in... but I've always been able to see some condensation in the bag so assumed it's okay.  maybe mist it from now on you think? to bring the next crop up better?

awesome - I was convinced I'd done something wrong after weeks of nothing.

oh, just thought I'd mention the reason for the crop is cluster headaches.  small doses helps get rid of attacks or even clusters completely, accoridng to the research from cluster heads

Do you think the shaking the bag activated the spores or soemthing?

... so in order to dry them out, I'm trying to find some:
Damp-Rid or Damp-be-Gone (Anhydrous calcium chloride)
which is what I need according to this page:
http://www.erowid.org/plants/mushrooms/mushrooms_mmgg.shtml

anyone know where to get any from in the UK?

edit - although this could do the job

just put them on a rack or near a fan to air dry if you dont have damp rid. a fan works just fine but takes a couple days to get to "cracker dry".

I would also recommend dunking your cake in COLD water for the next 24 hours. make sure it's completely submerged in the water, weigh it down with a plate if you have to. After the dunk, take it back out and put back into fruiting for your next flush. For future grows and flushes, I'd suggest misting 2-3 times a day and fanning 4-6 times a day (or as much as you have time for).

Keeping fresh air going and new moisture will give you better yields

Condensation on the inside of the bag dosent mean the humidity is correct fyi.  Make sure to mist and fan.
any one else spell shrooms with a ch?

dunk that cake for 24 hours after harvest then back into fruiting. make sure you are misting and fanning out that bag.

And also make sure its getting a good source of light (in the daylight range, if using natural daylight make sure its not direct sunlight, indirect only.)

You can get calcium chloride in a brewing shop - It's where I got mine. Good luck.

Just search ebay for silica gel. It does the trick for me. I fan dry on top of my pc extract fan for 48 hours, and then throw in a sealed plastic box with some silica gel pouches.
