How do I put the needle on the syringe???

As if they couldn't have made it anymore difficult. I'm getting ready to inoculate my jars but I can't figure out how to put the damn needle on the syringe!! I got the syringe from raphster spores. Here is the picture of the needle and syringe.

Please make directions in LEYMAN'S terms please. I've NEVER done this before.

I'm gonna go smoke a few bowls while I'm waiting for your responses. Thanks.

First off the syringe has a plug in it that screws off. Unscrew it and then screw the needle into the same spot....I have the same syringes...

Wait, the part on the tip of the syringe is supposed to TWIST off? It ain't twisting! Do I need to get a pair of needlenose pliars and screw it off that way? This is absurd.

Um.....nevmind....I got it!! I had to get a piece of tissue to use as a grip and THEN twist the damn cap off. Someone should tell them not to twist so damn hard.

just don't put the needle part down on a dirty table like the pic. the inside is exposed to nasties that way.

next time you assemble a syringe, try and do it quickly, inside of your glovebox. hopefully you didn't get any contams from having the needle opened up and just sitting there while you made this thread.

I had a hard time with my first syringe too.

I just used my teeth to get it off and on.
(Joking, DO NOT do that. Along with a mouth stab, you'll contaminate your entire syringe.)

When I got my very first syringes ever, I showed my wife and she immediately pulled off the cap on one syringe, risking contamination. I should have smacked her silly (jk). But hey man she did it without thinking, I'm glad you figured it out! Haha

I had a problem with my first syringe too.

What I do now:
Put a piece of foam and the needle in a lid with isopropyl alcohol. Twist out the plug, put on the needle. I have those same syringes, and don't worry - there's a small trap near the top to avoid contamination. Flame the needle, and the alcohol lights up. Give it a little squeeze to flush out the trap while it's being flamed. The alcohol in the needle should evaporate. Stick it half-way in the foam/sponge while it's red hot. Stick it through to inoculate. Leave the needle hanging until you can patch it with masking tape and pull out the needle in one motion. No need for the glove box or flow hood. When you are done, you can cap the needle by dipping it in candle wax.

I would recommend making a liquid culture with some of that, if you haven't already.

Do you think there would be any contams if I used a bleach wipe prior to setting down anything? I cleaned the whole table with lemon scented bleach wipes.

Well, I did that for the first time the last time I inoculated, and I'm going to inoculate tonight with the same syringe. I was thinking that it would just melt off, or pop off. I guess I'll find out soon enough if it's going to be a problem, but I've used wax as an air-tight seal when making jam.

We aint making jam... cultivating mushrooms is a little different

The reason for the air tight wax seal with jams is to fight mold growth. It is effective enough for not allowing air circulation.

The wax is not clogging up the inside or anything. It's a single drop of wax on the slanted sharp point. It's going to melt right off. I'm not using a flow hood or glove box, but there's a little salt in my LC's too. Please explain with a little more detail how this going to ruin my mushroom cultures... Maybe I'm not understanding your point.

This is off topic from the original post, and It's not an issue as far as I know. You may PM me if you'd like. I do wanna welcome any advice.

I don't think it will hurt anything. It just seems abit overkill. Most syringes come with a cap. I wipe or dip the cap in alcohol (dry it or let it evaporate) then put the cap back on.

I was wondering the same thing. I'm pretty new to the hobby, but it seems like the minute I take the plug out to screw on the needle i'll expose all the spores to contaminated air. Potentially contaminating the entire syringe. Paranoia or relatively possible?
