Wisconsin Yard Shrooms, Conocybe Smithii?
    #14447377 - 05/13/11 07:31 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I'm finding it a bit unlikely, but it is the right season and they look like they *could* be it.  Funny story, I was on a walk and had a random thought about mushrooms and seconds later saw a big bunch of mushrooms growing at the base of a tree.  So of course, I scooped them up into a plastic bag and I'm bringing them here for help ID'ing them!  It would be awesome if they were, because I just found out that my first mushroom trip in almost two years (planned for tonight) fell through...so this would be like a little replacement!  Pictures are at the bottom of the post, thanks for any help!

Long, thin white stems up to maybe six inches long but normally shorter. Whitish-yellowish-orangish caps ranging from about .5-2 inches accross, typically more like .5-1 inch though.  Gills start white at the center and turn dark brown as you move to the edges.  What I'm seeing isn't looking good I'll admit, and I know the pictures are blurry because of my shitty camera but any help would be awesome.  I'm holding out a little hope just because I have a feeling, but that might just be because I really want to trip tonight.

P.S. Some of them have blackened, upturned gills...I'm assuming they're rotten and bad to eat?

EDIT: Sorry, forgot to attach photos originally, I added them:

Psylosymon, since pics is a plural word you need to use the word "are" instead of "is".

OP, it is extremely unlikely that your mushrooms contain psilocybin.  They are much more likely to be poisonous.

For identification of active Conocybe species, small pics aren't going to do it.  Large, high quality pictures which are in focus are needed.  Even then, extreme caution is needed due to the existence of several other much more common deadly species which look very similar.

For instructions on posting pictures, please refer to this document.

That's Alan! :billymayshead:Also, seriously subject-verb disagreement can happen when one isn't looking. I've changed the phrasing of a post to only notice later that I forgot to change the verb tense or quantity.

 WOw i was actually expecting some found yard smithii here:crazy2::shocked: - -- yeah OP - your finds are as leponumos said - common coprinus - -- - they grow in those giant clusters sometimes by the thousands
The inky caps ( coprinus) in my yard finally popped up yesterday:sun:
That means there shud be morels around here SOOOOOOON or even now:awesomenod:
Those inky caps are VERY common around here in WI
The Conocybe Smithii are VERY rare around here and id say EXTREMELY rare in the burbs of WI
Keep hunting OP just don't be all so eager to eat your new finds in WI
We have LOTS of gourmet edibles and LOTS AND LOTS of deadlies around here
The Wisconsin "majik" is VERY few and far inbetween there man:thumbup::thumbup:
When you even do stumble upon what majik is here - most are pretty weak in potency too:cheers:
Please keep hunting - but PLEASE learn now the #1 rule of hunting wild mushrooms- ( its actually LIFE OR DEATH ) NEVER EAT ANYTHING unless your absolutely 100% know what your finds are:eek: If you fail to do this you may be the next victim who dies from eating unidentified finds

Go out looking for morels now in WI - GOodluck:goodluck:

Bollocks!!! Everything is relative. No matter how much booklearning one has, nothing compares to real-world experience.

I attended high school until my senior (with a GPA of 1.2 at my junior year) year when I dropped out because some asshole(s) called in a series of bomb threats for nearly a month straight.

http://daltondailycitizen.com/local/x488821595/Bomb-threat-disrupts-Northwest-again

Now I'm in a community college with the hopes of getting into UGA when I'm done. The main reason I'm doing this is it'll open up opportunities for grants and such things.

Hey hunters, don't "throw them in the garbage", whatever "they" turn out to be!  That's what compost piles, or even just shrub beds and such are for.

I was once a member of the Wisconsin Mycological Society.  'Tis a good group to belong to to learn more about the fungi native to this region.  We had a foray at Point Beach State Forest one year that turned up literally hundreds of species.  These were all laid out on picnic tables, id'ed, and then..........dumped into the garbage!

Maybe I'm the weird one, but that is just plain wrong in my book.  Here we were, surrounded by thousands of acres of forest land, and all anybody could think to do with them was to throw them away.  When I protested this move, several more important members scolded me, chidingly stating that "we haven't hurt the fungi", as if I didn't realize the mycellial networks were still intact.  Yes, I get that, but any organic material, whether mushrooms, coffee grounds, banana peels, whatever, is better returned to the productive environment than buried somewhere under feet of clay.

To my way of thinking, all mushrooms should be allowed to serve as food for something, even if just other microorganisms.  Yes, I do know that I am out of the mainstream with such thoughts.
