Literature about cultivation of Lophophora williamsii
    #14433490 - 05/11/11 05:51 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I'm about to buy this book:

Peyote and Other Psychoactive Cacti by Adam Gottlieb,

but before I do that maybe you guys can  give me some opinins about it?
Or recommend any other literature for peyote & san pedro cultivation...

(ebooks incuding the one I mentioned above would be welcome)

I would not pay for that book. Adam Gottlieb is not a real scientist and some of his "theories" have been disputed. The book itself is actually more of a booklet than a book. here is an excerpt.

This is interesting. It is a PhD dissertation.

I would really like to read "Enhancement of growth and alkaloid production in tissue cultures of peyote, Lophophora williamsii (Lemaire) Coulter" (1989) by William Robert Obermeyer but it does not appear that there are many copies of this dissertation in circulation.

Gottlieb's books is rightly so considered one of the absolute worst resource on the plant.

Probably the best reference for both Trichocereus and
Lophophora is the long out-of-print and very hard to find Sacred Cactus II by K. Trout. He indicated relatively recently that he was going to post a free copy online in the near future.

Peyote: The Divine Cactus by Edward F. Anderson is considered to be an excellent resource for a better understanding of the plant and people's interactions with it. I don't believe it deals heavily with cultivation, but apparently it's the best peyote specific resource out there otherwise.

Trout's Notes on San Pedro and related Trichocereus species (Sacred Cacti 3rd ed. Part B) contains hardly any cultivation information, but is a good resource for those trying to understand the active members of the genus.

The best cultivation information currently available is on various forums in the form of almost a decades worth of threads.

Ok so I'm not takin' it...

What 'bout Stamets & Chilton 'the Mushroom Cultivator'?
Almost everywhere (on pages of online shops) says that it is a cultivators bible (along wit 'Growing Gourmet & Medicinal Mushrooms' by Stamets), and because of that I get the feeling its a bit overrated...
So what U think?

TMC is awesome foundational material and every grower should read it.
But it is not the most up-to-date reference. And not always relevant to the home hobbyist. For the money, I'd start with Roger Rabbit's DVDs.

But really the Shroomery has all the info in all the grow guides everywhere, you don't need any other reference for mycology than the Mush Cult forum.

Right. He does talk about home cultivation, but the book isn't really geared to what we do today and now.
But it's a great reference and you should grab a copy when you can find one for cheap.

For example, coir gets no mention at all. None.
But there's instructions to make a batch of 7,000 pounds of compost.

Ok I'will post at market place, maybe someone would want to get rid of his/her copy.

As for more recent literature...
You have any particular up-to-date book in mind?

Haven't read it but I understand his book "Guide to Growing Magic Mushrooms" is a choice selection.

The second book posted was a good read , in the beginning. I especially appreciated the archeological data on Loph use.  the second half was just entirely useless though.  Mostly graphs with values that make no sense to anyone unless you were in on the study.

Where can I find more books like that?

The author of that book is involved with a conservation organization. You can learn more about them here: http://www.cactusconservation.org/CCI/t2c_0.html

For other books you can search www.worldcat.org It is a catalog of almost every book ever published. You can search by title, subject, author, etc. They do link to a lot of ebooks. If you find one that is not an ebook, you can get your local librarian to order the book for you for free through interlibrary loan.

Speaking of conservation, why aren't people out planting these things?
We get hard freezes here, but if I was to the south I'd look at outdoor propagation with a goal of colonization

Lots of people are out planting these things. The Native American Church has been cultivating peyote for quite a while. They currently have a DEA license to operate one "research green house" but they have been trying to get government permits to operate several green houses. That website will tell you about it. There are some cool pictures on there too.

Here's a picture of the DEA licensed "research green house."

Check this out. They are grafting the peyote so that they can mass propagate it.
